Larry Jeison, Priest in Charge.
Today’s encouragement comes
from a special guest, my sister
Jessica. Four years ago my sis
ter’s fiance, Gene, died in a car
accident on his way to work.
God has revealed a lot to Jes
sica since that day, and she’s
going to share part of that story
with you now.
In March of 2017 I met who
I believe to be one of the most
incredible people I’ll ever meet
on this side of Heaven - Gene.
In no time at all he earned
my love. Life had never been
sweeter or as full of adventure
as it had been with Gene. By
knowing him, and by being
known by him, I was made a
better person. He was every
thing I had ever prayed for and
so much more.
We were engaged several
months after we met. We began
wedding planning and house
hunting. We sent out save the
dates and booked our honey
moon. We were six months
away from forever when Gene
was killed in a car accident on
January 8th, 2018. I was dev
astated and disillusioned. I was
crippling under the weight of
grief.
Forever was much shorter than
we imagined it would be and so
I began to question God’s na
ture and His very love for me.
How could a good Father, who
loves me infinitely more than
my earthly father, allow such
tragedy to touch my life? How
could He allow me to believe in
a future He was never going to
fulfill? How is God just when
He feels cruel and unfair?
But the truth is the Bible could
be no clearer. God specifically
says all who follow Him can
expect hardship. So I had a
decision to make - depend on
myself or depend on my God. I
chose the latter. I began speaking
God’s words back to Him, chal
lenging Him to show me He is
truly who He says He is in His
word. Lord I believe, help my
unbelief! (Mark 9:24).
God, you say you love me
enough to send your own son
to die for me so wrap me up in
your love. Lord, your word says
you’re near to the broken-heart
ed so be near to me now. Jesus,
you say in your word that you are
peace that surpasses understand
ing so give me peace today when
I don’t understand. You say you
give rest to the weary so give my
weary soul rest. You say you’re
good so show me your goodness
in the midst of all my pain. You
say you can take these ashes and
make something beautiful, so do
it. And day by day He did.
What’s true in the light is still
true in the dark. So take these
truths and focus on them daily.
Park your mind there. Read
them, write them, speak them,
sing them, preach them to your
self until your soul sings with
confidence that God is exactly
who He says He is even when
you can’t trace His hand.
What Jessica said about be
lieving the truth of God’s word
and repeating it back to Him re
minds me of some of the Psalms
of David where we find David
preaching God’s truth to him
self. Psalm 103 is a perfect
example - David wrote Psalm
103 to his own soul! The first
two verses of Psalm 103 say,
“My soul, bless the Lord, and
all that is within me bless His
holy name. My soul, bless the
Lord, and do not forget all
His benefits.” Later in verses
13-14, David reminds his soul
“as a father has compassion on
his children, so the Lord has
compassion on those who fear
Him. For He knows what we
are made of, remembering that
we are dust.” When darkness
comes in our lives, sometimes
even making it feel like we’ll
never see God’s light again,
it’s time to preach God’s word
to our soul - My soul, bless the
Lord, and do not forget all His
benefits!
Let’s pray, “Lord, thank you
for your truth, written down
in Your word as a testimony
to us - in the light and in the
dark, in the good times and the
bad times, eternally standing
as truth in every generation.
Teach us to trust Your truth
above our feelings and our
circumstances. Teach us to
preach to our own souls when
we need to be convinced.
Thank you for being a com
passionate Father, who knows
what we’re made of - the dust
formed by Your hands and
the breath of Life, given from
Your lungs. In Jesus’ name,
Amen!”
