Deer Encounter Leads to Log
Truck Overturning on Highway 24
By Joe Brady, Editor

The Times
A routine drive turned into a harrowing
ordeal for Joe Griffin of Lyons last
Monday, August 21, when an encounter
with deer on Highway 24 sent his
log truck careening off the road and
overturning onto its right side.
The incident occurred around noon as
Griffin was traveling westbound on
Highway 24. According to his account,
three deer suddenly darted onto the
roadway, prompting him to make a
split-second decision to veer to the
right to avoid a collision. However,
his attempt to avoid the animals led
to a series of unfortunate events that
culminated in a dramatic accident.
As Griffin veered to the right, his log
truck collided with a road sign, causing
it to lose control. The truck continued
its path for nearly 300 feet off the
road before disaster struck once again.
The load of logs that the truck was
transporting shifted, causing the vehicle to tip over onto its right side.
First responders were swiftly dispatched to the scene. Emergency personnel worked diligently to free Griffin from
the overturned buck's cabin. Subsequently, Griffin was transported to Memorial Hospital for medical evaluation
and treatment. The extent of his injuries remains undisclosed at this time.
Local authorities were quick to respond and address the aftermath of the accident. Traffic was temporarily
disrupted on Highway 24 as crews worked to clear the scene of debris and right the overturned log truck. The
incident serves as a reminder of the unexpected challenges that can arise when sharing the road with wildlife and
the importance of remaining vigilant while driving, especially in areas prone to animal crossings.
The accident also highlights the potential dangers associated with transporting heavy cargo. The shifting of
the logs not only led to the truck overturning but also exacerbated the impact of the collision. Photo by Sarah
