GAMECOCKS FACE
WESTSIDE
AT THE BATTLEFIELD
Looking to rebound from
a surprisingly one-sided
loss at the hands of upstart
Bacon County, the youthful
SCHS Gamecocks of Ron
Duncan will look to use
their first game experience
to improve and round
up the Patriots of 4-AA
Westside this Friday night
on the new field turf of The
Battlefield on the campus
of Westside Fligh School.
The Pats come into the
game at 0-2 with losses to
AAA Flephzibah 35-14 and
AD2 power Aquinas 14-12
last week.
For eight different
Gamecocks, several going
both ways, last week’s 2023
lidlifter was the first start
of their career. At times it
showed though there were
but two turnovers and a
mere three penalties. Both
are generally a tell-tale
sign of young teams. On
the other hand Westside is
a veteran team that lost last
Friday for their inability to
convert extra points. Both
they and Aquinas scored
two TDs.
Gamecock fans who
travel and those who watch
on Screven Gamecocks
TV will see a Patriot team
that is extremely big and
physical up front, much like
Bacon County. Offensively
they are a run-first team
that employs three different
quarterbacks. Power is
their modus operandi,
frequently with three backs
lined up to one side, two
directly behind an offensive
lineman.
For the Gamecocks and
the Patriots this will mark
the 19 th meeting with the
Roosters, after their 27-0
win a season ago, leading
the series 13-5 having won
the last seven in a row and
12 of the last 13. In 2022
then-sophomore Miyon
Fulcher rushed 12-63 and
two scores while senior
Jake Pollock rushed 8-62,
also for two scores. SCHS
outgained WHS 314-117.
Now sophomore linebacker
Andre Michaud led the
way defensively with five
solo tackles, including a
sack. That Westside team
had but five seniors, this
one still does not have even
ten. The Pats are building
toward a run at a AA
region championship, if not
this year, definitely next
year. WHS was Region
4-AA mnners-up just two
seasons ago and are ready
to challenge defending
state champion Thomson
for that spot in 2023..
SCMS FOOTBALL
OPENS WITH A WIN
With nearly 200 yards rushing the SCMS Gamecocks defeated Claxton 20-12 at Kelly
Memorial Stadium last Thursday afternoon. The team will go to Jenkins County tomorrow
afternoon for their second contest. Also last week the softball SCMS Lady Gamecocks lost
to ECI. They will next be in action on September 6 when they host SEB in a doubleheader.
The young Gamecocks were led offensively by Cleve Mingle (55 yards and one TD),
William Roberts (50 yards and one TD), James Howard (33 yards), and Lavaris Burney (31
yards). Defensively Howard was in on eight tackles and Burney four. Mingle was in on three
and had a pick-six of 90 yards.
In their loss to ECI, the Lady Gamecocks got hits from Abbi and Gracie Ellis and Dalishia
Washington. Kherrighan Fountain and Rain Cail had rbi and Kellan McMillan had two
stolen bases.

CROSS COUNTRY SHORT
ON RUNNERS,
WILL NOT REPEAT
Winners of region
championships in ten of
the last 11 years, the 2023
SCHS Lady Gamecock
cross country team of
veteran coach Anna
Canetto will not be picking
up another title this season.
As the season begins next
week with a September 7
meet at the Black Creek
Scout Camp, there are but
three team members, two
short of the five necessary
to compete. Instead the
three members will be
competing as individuals
shooting for a top six
finish at the Region 3-A
D1 meet to qualify for state
themselves.
Canetto’s group of
three includes veteran
senior Ashley Langley,
sophomore Addie
Rountree, and freshman
Caroline Boswell. Langley
is in her third season with
the program, finishing
fourth at the region meet
in 2022 and sixth in 2021.
Both finishes were good
enough to qualify her
for state as an individual
if necessary. It will be
this year. Rountree was
a member of the region
championship squad a year
ago, but an injury sidelined
her for all of the season.
Boswell is in her first
season at SCHS.
