New charier school moving forward BY DAN WHISENHUNT danwhisenhunt@reporternewspapers.net The founders of a charter school in Buckhead are publi- cally thanking Atlanta Board of Education Member Nan cy Meister, District 4, for securing approval and funding for the school. Atlanta Classical Academy Launch Team Chairman Mat thew Kirby said Meister was the main reason the BOE unan imously approved the charter on Aug. 12, despite a recom mendation from Superintendent Erroll Davis to deny the charter petition. “Thanks in large part to the leadership of District 4 Rep resentative Nancy Meister, the board prioritized the bene fits of school choice and our high-quality school plan,” Kir by said in an email. “We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with APS to create a high performance organization that will be great for kids, for families, and for Atlanta.” The thank you comes as Meister seeks re-election to the District 4 seat. She faces opposition from Taryn Chilivis SEE SCHOOL, PAGE 3 Forum focuses on school finances By DAN WHISENHUNT danwhisenhunt@reporternewspapers.net North Atlanta Parents for Public Schools invited the pub lic to Bolton Academy on Aug. 28 to meet candidates for the Atlanta Board of Education, and the room was full of poten tial contenders. Candidates for Seat 8 At-Large, and Districts 3, 4 and 5 spoke. Blogger Robert Stockwell was the moderator, and his questions focused on school finances and the selection of a new superintendent. Buckhead residents are primarily affected by District 4 and Seat 8 races. The District 4 race heated up in recent weeks with the announcement of a challenger to incumbent Nancy Meister.
