‘Critical’ year ahead
for DeKalb schools’
board appointees

John Coleman sees the next year as “critical” for DeKalb
County’s schools.
Coleman is one of six people appointed by Gov. Nathan
Deal on March 13 to hold seats on the DeKalb school board,
replacing board members Deal suspended after the South
ern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) accrediting
agency put the district’s accreditation on probation and crit
icized its board for meddling in school affairs and misman
aging finances.
“The next year is critical for accreditation,” said Coleman,
31, a Brookhaven resident with a Master of Business Adminis
tration degree from Harvard University. “Then, I think we need
to address long-term issues.”

at Cross Keys forum

At a civic forum at Cross Keys High School, officials from
the city of Brookhaven assured residents they are working
to improve living conditions and infrastructure around Bu
ford Highway.
During the March 19 forum, hosted by the Cross Keys
Foundation, Brookhaven Mayor J. Max Davis, City Coun
cilman Joe Gebbia, City Manager Marie Garrett and DeKalb
Board of Education Representative Marshall Orson took
questions from residents about the school system and the
new city.
