Standout Students
Local students work to make
the world a better place
Editor’s note: In 2015, Reporter Newspapers identified 22 local high school students
who make significant contributions to their communities. They won prizes for
academics, excelled in athletics, and volunteered to do charity work close to home
and in faraway places. Here are the “Standout Students” we met during the past
year and, according to officials from their high schools, where they are now.
Abraham Araya set the
cross-country record at Cham-
blee Charter High School and
now attends Cornell University.
Aidan Brady, a senior at
Mount Vernon Presbyterian
School, developed “Wordzie,”
an iPhone app.
Ansley Guthrie, a student at
the Whitefield Academy, helped
a charity with imprisoned Ugan
dan children.
Caroline Grant, from the
The Lovett School, developed a
reading curriculum for children.
John Willingham, a senior
at Mount Vernon Presbyterian
School, organized rocketry and
Bible study clubs, and earned
his pilot’s license.
Pascal Acree, a senior at Riv-
erwood International Charter
School, presented at an interna
tional radon symposium.
Andrew Agrippina start
ed a pro-life club at Holy Spirit
Preparatory School and attends
Washington and Lee University.
Ean Huang, a graduate of
Holy Spirit Preparatory School,
helped provide earthquake relief
in China.
Josh Doman, a senior at
The Westminster Schools, was
awarded silver in the United
States Physics Olympiad.
Sarah Corning, a senior at
The Lovett School, taught and
volunteered in Guatemala.
Asia Durr, a basketball star
at St. Pius X Catholic High
School, plays for the University
of Louisville.
Haley Vincent, a student at
The Westminster Schools, vol
unteers with youthSpark.
Kenny Buckner, a gradu
ate of Holy Innocents’ Episco
pal School, was named Atlanta’s
Youth Poet Laureate and attends
Syracuse University.
Sydney Holmes, as a Dun-
woody High School student,
taught youngsters to stay safe.
Avi Botwinick, a senior at
the Weber School, is part of the
robotics team.
Haley Barnes, a student at
The Lovett School, has raised
money for cancer research.
Matt Tanenblatt, a gradu
ate of Pace Academy, introduced
“Scootle,” an app that addresses
traffic congestion.
William Denning, a senior
at The Westminster Schools,
won the Atlanta Interactive
Marketing Association Award.
Eagle Scout and Lovett
School senior Benjamin Yar-
mowich cleaned over 300 signs
in his neighborhood.
John Arnold, a junior at
Holy Spirit Preparatory School,
made lunches for disadvantaged
children.
Max Harris, a senior at We
ber School, formed the school’s
Investment Club.
Xanthos Likes, a graduate of
Marist School, published a chil
dren’s book, “Corporate Fish.”
He’s on a Mormon mission.
