What Christmas is all about

Isn’t there anyone who knows what
Christmas is all about? Man, do I feel that!
Charlie Brown and I have a lot in common.
Before I was a follower of Jesus Christ, if you
asked me what Christmas was all about, I
could give you the pat answers. Christmas
was about presents. It was also about getting
together with family; especially getting
together with my mom’s side of the family
and eating my grandpa’s prime rib. We had
tons of traditions that I loved.
Then, I met Jesus. The traditions are still a
part of Christmas, but I am SO thankful that
I know what Christmas is all about.
In the “Charlie Brown Christmas Special”
(which also was and still is part of my
Christmas tradition) the characters try to find
out what Christmas is all about. The Special
looks a lot like the world in which I live.
There are a lot of people going through life
asking, “Isn’t there anyone who knows what
Christmas is all about?”
In the Special, the whole Peanuts crew has
talked about cards and presents and trees.
They have especially talked about one tree.
The crew seems to think the tree is the key to
the perfect Christmas play. Charlie Brown, as
the director, is tasked with finding the perfect
tree. He goes shopping
and finds the saddest
tree in the lot. He
thinks with a little love
and some decorations it
would be the perfect
tree. I love Charlie
Brown because he
always sees the best in
people and things.
Charlie Brown proudly comes into the
rehearsal and the room erupts with
dissatisfaction. Charlie Brown has the right
idea. He sees the best. Christmas in his mind
is a special time when things that are rejected
and neglected can be restored and celebrated.
Unfortunately, the crew doesn’t see it the
same way. They want everything to be
perfect in the way that they see things and the
way they want things to be.
Everyone laughs at Charlie Brown and his
pitiful little tree. Coming to the end of his
rope he yells, “Isn’t there anyone who knows
what Christmas is all about?”Linus speaks up:
“Sure, Charlie Brown, I can tell you what
Christmas is all about. Lights, please.
“And there were in the same country
shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch
over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of
the Lord came upon them, and the glory of
the Lord shone round about them: and they
were sore afraid. And the angel said unto
them, ‘Lear not: for behold, I bring unto you
good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all
people. Lor unto you is born this day in the
City of David a Savior, which is Christ the
Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye
shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling
clothes, lying in a manger.’ And suddenly
there was with the angel a multitude of the
heavenly host, praising
God, and saying, ‘Glory
to God in the highest,
and on earth peace,
good will toward men.’”
That’s what Christmas
is all about, Charlie
Brown.”
I love Linus, too. He
tells Charlie Brown and
anyone else what Christmas is all about.
During his monologue, Linus drops his
blanket. When he says “fear not” he drops his
security blanket - that he never drops. He
boldly tells the Christmas story from the
Bible. Linus reminds us that Christmas isn’t
about the traditions (although they are
wonderful), it isn’t about the presents
(although they are wonderful), Christmas is
about the birth of Jesus. That is what
Christmas is all about.
Merry Christmas from the Bowdon Baptist
Church Lamily!
