Avoid these investment mistakes

We all make mistakes in many areas of life.
These mistakes are usually fairly harmless —
we took a wrong aim while driving, used the
wrong ingredients in a recipe and so on. But
sometimes, our mistakes can be costly —
especially those connected to investing.
Here are some of the most common invest
ment mistakes:
• Too much buying and selling - Some
people find it exciting to constantly buy and
sell investments in the pursuit of big gains.
Yet, frequent trading can work against you in
a couple of ways. First, it can be expensive —
if you’re always buying and selling invest
ments, you could rack up taxes, fees and com
missions. Perhaps even more important,
though, excessive purchases and sales can
make it difficult to follow a unified, cohesive
investment strategy. Such a strategy requires,
among other things, careful construction and
management of an investment portfolio that’s
appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and
time horizon. Heavy trading can disrupt this
strategy.
• Failing to diversify - If you only owned
one type of asset, such as growth-oriented
stocks, your portfolio could take a hit when
the financial markets go through a downturn.
But not all investments will respond the same
way to the same forces — for example, stocks
and bonds can move in different directions at
any given time. And that’s why it’s usually a
good idea to own a mix of investments, which
tan include domestic and foreign stocks,
bonds, certificates of deposit (CDs) and gov
ernment securities. Keep in mind, though, that
while diversification can help reduce the
impact of market volatility, it can’t guarantee
profits or protect against losses in a declining
market.
• Trying to “time” the market - “Buy low
and sell high” might be the original piece of
investment advice, but it’s pretty hard to fol
low — because no one can really predict
when an investment will reach “low” or
“high” points. Also, trying to “time” the mar
ket in this way can lead to bad decisions, such
as selling investments whose price has
dropped, even if these same investments still
have good business fundamentals and strong
prospects.
• Not understanding what you’re invest
ing in - If you don’t know the nature of
investments when you buy them, you could
set yourself up for unpleasant surprises. For
example, some companies, by the very nature
of their business and the type of industry
they’re in, may consistently pay dividends to
their investors even though their stock prices
may only show relatively modest price gains
over time. If you bought shares of this stock,
thinking it had the potential to achieve quite
substantial appreciation, you might end up
disappointed.
• Making the wrong comparisons -
You’re no doubt familiar with some of the
most well-known investment benchmarks —
the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average
and the Nasdaq Composite. But it might be
counterproductive to compare your results
against these indexes. If you have a diversi
fied portfolio, you’ll own an array of invest-
NURSING HOME from page 10
In an effort to discover how such a long
time, huge wastewater spill could go
unchecked, StarNews questioned professionals
in the field of both real estate and permits.
According to these experts, during the 1970s
and 1980s - Carrollton Nursing and Rehab was
built in 1986 - permit
records were “spotty”,
meaning, it was com
mon for septic
tanks/systems to be
installed/constructed for
new homes/buildings
without obtaining a per
mit. And, thus, without a
physical permit on file
(prior to computerized
records) the septics and
sewage systems’ exis
tences would not be
“known”, although cer
tainly assumed that a
nursing home would
have a sewage output to
somewhere. Without “knowledge/permit” of a
sewage system existing, an inspection would
not be scheduled. This is one possible explana
tion as to how this decades’ old sewage flow
occurred without inspection, oversight, or inter
ference from EPD. Again, the correct asump-
tion is that any operating nursing home facility
would have wastewater exiting somewhere,
and that exit system would require inspection.
StarNews asked Boutelle for the following
records: “1. Permit dates of the two (2) on-site
sewage treatment plants
“2. Inspection dates of the two (2) on-site
sewage treatment plants since each was
permitted
“3. One copy each of each of the inspections
for each of the on-site sewage treatment plants
... without a physical permit on file
(prior to computerized records) the
septics and sewage systems’
existences would not be “known”,
although certainly assumed that a
nursing home would have a sewage
output to somewhere. And without
“knowledge/permit” of a sewage
system existing, an inspection
would not be scheduled. This is one
possible explanation as to how this
decades ohl sewage flow occurred
without inspection, oversight,
interference from EPD.
or
ments that won’t fit into any single index or
benchmark, so you won’t get an apples-to-
apples comparison. You’re better off compar
ing your portfolio’s performance against the
only benchmark that really matters — the pro
gress you need to make to help achieve your
goals. Investing will always have its chal
lenges — but you can help make it easier on
yourself by staying away from as many mis
takes as possible.

Boutelle responded: “There is not currently a
permitted system at this location. In addition,
we are not aware or 2 treatment systems at this
location. We have an active enforcement case
at this facility to bring the site into compliance
with the Rules.”
StarNews: “1. Are you saying that Carrollton
Nursing and Rehabilitation
facility’s two on-site sewage
treatment plants do not have
permits/original permits?
“2. Are you saying that
two on-site sewage treat
ment plants were installed
without permits?
“3. Are you saying that
neither on-site sewage treat
ment plant has been
inspected since 1986?”
Boutelle: “1. -1 am only
aware of one on-site plant
(an old activated sludge
plant followed by a polish
ing pond). The treatment
system does not have a per
mit through EPD.
“2 -1 do not know if the system was installed
without a permit. I do know it is not currently
permitted by EPD.
“3 - I do not know that answer. The files in
our office do not go that far back. I do know
that this site is not currently permitted by EPD
and therefore we have not inspected this
facility.”
StarNews emailed Boutelle on November
6th inquiring as to whether or not the sewage
spill had been halted yet or not?
On Tuesday, November 7th, Brian Boutelle
emailed StarNews with the following response:
“There was not an observed sewage spill dur
ing either of my site visits. In October. Thanks,
BB.”
