ULMS Math Team Places Second
The Upson Lee Middle School math team recently competed in the Griffin RESA Middle School
Math Contest, placing second in Division II, medium-sized schools.
The Griffin RESA Region consists of Butts, Fayette, Henry, Lamar, Newton, Pike, Griffin-Spald-
ing, and Thomaston-Upson school districts. The ULMS Math Team includes Kit Logan, Brody
Yates, James Meyer, Ronik Patel, and Karsen Pitts.

Winners of 2021 Essay & Art Contest

annual Essay & Art Contests,
sponsored by Georgia Farm
Bureau.
The Essay Contest was
open to all Georgia middle
school students enrolled in
grades 6-8. The Art Contest
was open to all Georgia high
school students enrolled in
grades 9-12.
The Art Contest was a
creative way for students to
explore Certified Farm Mar
kets across the state by
drawing a scene from one of
these markets they visited in
person or online at
gfb.ag/CertifiedFarmMar-
ket.
The Essay Contest’s topic
was “How does utilization of
Certified Farm Markets and
agritourism benefit both the
farmer and the consumer?”
First place winners will
move on to compete on a
district level and, if selected
as winners for District 5, will
move on to compete at the
state level.

Families Can Enter
for a Chance to Win a
Contribution to Pre-K
Students’ College Savings
For the fourth year, the
Path2College 529 Plan and
the Department of Early
Care and Learning
(DECAL) have partnered to
award four Georgia Pre-K
students with money for
college through the state’s
Path from Pre-K to College
Sweepstakes. One child
from Metro Atlanta, South
east, North and South
Georgia will win a $1,529
contribution to a Path2Col-
lege 529 Plan. The winner’s
Pre-K will also win $529.
“The key to preparing
for the future is knowing
what tools you have avail
able to help you achieve
your goals. We work hard
to make sure every Georgia
family with a young child
knows about our state’s col
lege savings plan,” said
Georgia Student Finance
Commission President
Lynne Riley. “This sweep-
stakes helps us connect
with families, and four
lucky students will get a
head start on their college
savings!”
Parents, legal guardians
or grandparents with chil
dren enrolled in one of
Georgia’s Pre-K Programs
for the 2020-2021 school
year may submit entries
online at www.path2col-
lege529.com/PreK. One
child in each of the four re
gions (Metro Atlanta,
Southeast, North and South
Georgia) will be randomly
selected to win.

Kelly Awarded LaGrange
College Scholarships
Upson Lee High Senior
Trey Kelly recently partic
ipated in LaGrange Col
lege’s virtual Presidential
Scholarship Day and
earned additional scholar
ship awards.
At the competition,
students were judged on
their performance in
group discussions, written
essays, and individual in
terviews. Students offered
scholarships can utilize the
awards in the fall of 2021
and scholarships are re
newable for the following
three years.
T-U Educators Receive Second COVID-19 Vaccine Dose

Upson Regional Medical Center for partnering with the school system to ensure that faculty and staff received vaccinations.

Greene stated that he
chose Sanders, who
teaches history at ULHS
and taught advanced
placement government to
Greene, because he “was
an enjoyable teacher who
challenged students to
excel.” Sanders also leads
the Fellowship of Christian
Athletes meetings, which
Greene says were always
helpful and motivating for
his faith.
Greene, the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Lance Greene,
plans to attend Gordon
State College and major in
nursing.
The student Teacher
Achievement Recognition
Program was created to
focus public attention on
Georgia’s outstanding stu
dents and the teachers who
have been most instru
mental in their academic
development. Now in its
63rd year, the STAR Pro
gram has honored more
than 28,500 high school
seniors who have in turn
chosen their STAR
teachers to share in this
recognition.
Upson-Lee High School
and the Thomaston-Upson
School System are very ap
preciative of the support
given to the local STAR
program by the Thomas
ton Kiwanis Club, accord
ing to school officials.
