The EMA Digest: Tornadoes
“A quick note about things you should know in emergencies”
By Martha Anne McCarty
Upson EMA Director
Tornadoes are the most
sudden, unpredictable and vi
olent storms on earth. Torna
does aren't like hurricanes that
are bom over open waters and
can take days to reach land.
Tornadoes are spawned
from thunderstorms that form
when warm humid air meets a
mass of cool, dry air. Only one
in a hundred thunderstorms
produces a tornado. They
happen quickly and often stay
on the ground for only a few
minutes. Tomadic weather
tends to have a greenish tint to
the sky.
While Florida gets the
most tornados of any state, a
strip of land that extends from
northeast Texas through Okla
homa, Kansas, Nebraska, and
Missouri has more tornadoes
than any other place in the
U.S. That area is called "Tor
nado Alley." Georgia has its
own “Tornado Alley,” across
northern Georgia, ranging
from Canton and Gainesville
to the Tennessee line. A sec
ond “Tornado Alley” appears
to be developing over the last
several years across West Cen
tral Georgia from the La
grange / H amilton / Columbus
area across to the
Bibb/Jones/Butts/Putnam/G
reene Counties region. (Guess
who’s in the middle of that
path - Upson County!)
During the last century,
more than 10,000 Americans
died in tornadoes. About
1,000 tornadoes are recorded
each year in the U.S. - over 10
times more than in any other
country.
Tornadoes can happen in any
state, at any time — on the
plains, in cities or forests, early
in the morning or late in the
evening. They can start in an
empty field, or in a busy city,
picking up homes, cars, and
businesses leaving nothing but
destruction in their path.
Tornado Facts
•A tornado is a violently
rotating column of air extend
ing from a cumuliform cloud,
such as a thunderstorm, to the
ground.
•Tornadoes may appear
nearly transparent until dust
and debris are picked up or a
cloud forms within the funnel.
The average tornado moves
from southwest to northeast,
but tornadoes can move in any
direction and can suddenly
change their direction of mo
tion.
•The average forward
speed of a tornado is 30 mph
but may vary from nearly sta
tionary to 70 mph.
•The strongest tornadoes
have rotating winds of more
than 200 mph.
•Tornadoes can accom
pany tropical storms and hur
ricanes as they move onto
land.
•Waterspouts are torna
does that form over warm
water. Water spouts can move
onshore and cause damage to
coastal areas.
Be Ready Year Round
•Tornadoes can occur at
any time of day, any day of the
year, when conditions are ripe
for development.
•Have a plan of action be
fore severe weather threatens.
You need to respond quickly
when a warning is issued or a
tornado is spotted.
•When conditions are
warm, humid, and windy, or
skies are threatening, monitor
for severe weather watches
and warnings by listening to
NOAA Weather Radio, log
ging onto weather.gov, or tun
ing into your favorite
television or radio weather in
formation source. And make
sure that you are registered for
Upson Alerts, so that you can
receive warnings on your mo
bile devices and/or home
phones. Download the Ever-
