The EMA Digest: Broken Bones
“A quick note about things you should know in emergencies”
By Martha Anne McCarty
Upson EMA Director
What would you do if you
suspected a broken bone?
Most of the time, folks
wonder if an injury is a frac
ture or just a sprain. If you
are unable to use the affected
body part in a normal fash
ion, if it shows obvious defor
mity, or if pain is so persistent
that it makes movement im
possible, you should consider
it a serious injury.
Most fractures can only
be determined by radio-
graphic studies to confirm ac
tual fracture sites. Fractures
can be: hairline - just an
ever-so-slight crack; green-
stick - splintered or frayed
like a green tree branch; com
minuted - burst to pieces in
several places; compound -
complete break that is out of
place, and may or may not
penetrate the skin.
The best advice for treat
ment of fractures is to do no
further harm and to immo
bilize it as you find it. With
what? Use newspapers, mag
azines, a soft, thick towel,
anything that can stabilize
and then support the injured
area. Ice can be applied with
a layer of protection between
the ice bag and skin. Seek im
mediate medical attention.
