Griffin Judicial Circuit District Attorney Marie
Broder gave a “state of the office” presentation to
the Thomaston Kiwanis Club recently, which in
cluded telling members that murders almost dou
bled across the country in 2020. Jury trials have
resumed after a delay of more than a year, and
COVID protocol continues to provide a challenge,
she said. According to Broder, Spalding County
accounts for 48 percent of her cases, Fayette 22
percent, Upson 21 percent, and Pike County ac
counts for five percent. Almost half the cases are
drug-related and the COVID backlog could take
as many as five years to clear, she said.

We celebrate, this week,
freedom that has been pro
tected by blood shed over these
many years during wars. Those that were not killed in
battles have lived with memories that still are a part of
life.
There’s another freedom that’s available that was
made possible by the bloodshed of the Lord Jesus
Christ. Spiritual freedom is for whosoever will come to
Him and receive this freedom. Pay close attention to
the words from John 8:36. “If the Son therefore shall
make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”
Why are there so many professing Christians that
do not live in the freedom of the Son of God? Many are
bound by rules and are attempting to carry a load that’s
impossible to carry. Of course, there are ministers ac
ross this nation that brow-beat people continually.
The answer is simple and that’s why the majority
miss it. The answer is knowing the truth. Read and
obey what is said in John 8:31, 32. “If ye continue in
my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall
know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
It’s going to take more than grilling out on July 4 to
make anyone free. It will take getting into the Word of
God and continuing in it. Spiritual freedom is wonder
ful.
