Lots of things that couldn't be done have been done.-Charles Auston Bates
Recipes By

Even though I have had a hor
rible cold, we managed to have
our Christmas celebration this
past Sunday. Even though I
started early this year on getting
out my Christmas decorations, I
still experienced the last-minute
rush to get everything done. I will
have to say that it feels a little
strange that we won’t all be gath
ering for Christmas day, and I just
tell myself that things will get
back to normal next year. I am so
thankful that Covid is not ruling
the holidays for us this year, and
it is my prayer that this illness will
leave our country for good.
This week I would like to share
a couple of recipes that we enjoy
and are easy and quick to prepare
during this special time of the
year. The vanilla custard cake has
become one of Mac’s favorite des
serts.
BAKED CHICKEN
AND BACON
4 to 6 skinless, boneless chicken
breasts
6 to 8 slices of bacon (I use the
low-fat bacon)
l can cream of mushroom soup
l can cream of chicken soup
1 cup of sour cream
8 ounces shredded cheese
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Wrap bacon around chicken
breast and place into a lightly
greased casserole dish. Mix mush
room and chicken soup with the
sour cream in a bowl. Pour mix
ture over the chicken. Bake for an
hour or until the chicken is
tender. Remove from oven and
spread cheese over the top and
cook an additional 15 minutes.
VANILLA CUSTARD CAKE
V2 cup unsalted butter, melted
2 cups lukewarm milk
1 V4 cups confectioners’ sugar
4 eggs, separated
1 tablespoon water
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Powdered sugar for dusting
Preheat the oven to 325 de
grees. Lightly grease an 8 x 8-inch
baking dish, set aside. Whip the
egg whites until stiff peaks form,
set aside. Beat the egg yolks and
powdered sugar until pale yellow.
Mix in melted butter and the
tablespoon of water until well
combined. Mix in the flour until
evenly incorporated. Slowly beat
in the milk and vanilla extract
until well incorporated. Fold in
the egg whites, a little at a time.
Pour the batter into the pan and
bake for 40 to 50 minutes or until
the cake is barely jiggly in the
center. Cool the cake completely
before dusting with the confec
tioners’ sugar.
Enjoy, Mary Ann McCrary

Ritz Theatre Reopens

For many in Thomaston,
childhood memories include vis
iting downtown Thomaston for
shopping, socializing, and view
ing movies at the Ritz Theatre.
Today, most children in town
do not remember a time before
wearing masks in public, much
less visiting the hometown the
atre. This December, children
and adults alike had the oppor
tunity to enjoy a carefree night,
watching The Grinch at The Ritz
Theatre, which projected its first
film since closing and undergo
ing new ownership in 2019.
A line of anxious and excited
families formed in front of the
theatre before the doors opened,
an hour before the film began on
Friday, Dec. 10. For someone
with many childhood memories
of the downtown staple, the ren
ovated theatre still holds true to
many unique characteristics.
With hardly any empty seats,
the theatre was filled with the
laughter and cheers of children,
as well as the nostalgic smell of
theatre popcorn. Some, like
Asher McClain and his friends,
dressed as the Grinch in prepa
ration for the film. Although a
few projects are still in the
works, like the renovation of the
theatre balcony, the Ritz Theatre
has officially reopened.
