Top honor for former Dawson coach
Howington inducted into National Wrestling Hall of Fame
By Jessica Brown

The Georgia Chapter of the
National Wrestling Hall of
Fame recently celebrated their
class of 2018 inductees and a
former Dawson County coach
was one of them.
William Howington
received a letter in January let
ting him know that he would
be inducted into the National
Hall of Fame, and on May 6
the Georgia Chapter of the
NWHOF gathered together at
the Sonesta Hotel in Gwinnett
County to celebrate and induct
the state’s seven newest
inductees.
Howington has been a
prominent name in the wres
tling scene in north Georgia
since the 1970s when he was a
star athlete at Jefferson High
School. He was a varsity let-
terman in football, track, and
his true passion: wrestling.
While in college at the
University of Georgia,
Howington began officiating
and continues to be a referee
45 years later.
“The fact that it’s individual,
that an ordinary athlete can
work hard and learn the sport
and become good at it,” said
Howington about his favorite
part about wrestling. “You
don’t have to worry about
other people, just yourself out
there.”
Howington has made a
name for himself in many
schools around north Georgia
for his excellence in coaching.
He founded the wrestling pro
gram at Winder-Barrow High
School in 1979 and played an
instrumental part in maintain
ing the junior high program at
his alma mater. He mentored
and coached Jefferson’s pres
ent wrestling coach, Doug
Thurmond, who himself is a
Hall of Famer and multiple
state champion.
In 1984 Howington found
himself coaching the wrestlers
at Dawson County High
School and took them to the
state championship in 1987.

The Dawson County Tigers came
ready to play against Pickens High
School in the spring game Friday
night, and though no score was kept
for the practice game, it gave Head
Coach Sid Maxwell a chance to see
where the varsity team’s strengths are
as they look toward the 2018 season.
“I thought Friday we competed
well,” said Maxwell. “We made a few
mistakes but Pickens did, too, so you
know, I was real pleased where we
are and we still have a long ways to
go.”
The spring game was a chance to
get as many players on the field as
possible. With a deep roster, Maxwell
was able to rotate many positions,
giving most athletes an opportunity
on the field which is a goal for the
team this year under their motto
“Attack the Day.”
“The biggest compliment that I can
really say on this team is we played
so many people on Friday night I saw
zero jealousy and I saw people pull
ing for each other,” said Maxwell.
“The chemistry was really good.
They got behind each other and
pulled for each other whether they
were in the game or not.”
The varsity Tigers are losing 25
seniors, including four-year starting
quarterback Coey Watson, but
Maxwell isn’t too concerned as he
has a large group of rising seniors.

Brady to play
at Reinhardt
First athlete from Dawson
volleyball to sign scholarship

Dawson County High School Head Volleyball Coach
Tanya Porter said Reinhardt University will be getting a
great athlete but an “impeccable person” as she cele
brated Kati Brady’s scholarship signing May 16.
“Kati has an enormous amount of compassion. She
is selfless. Time and time again she’s proved that she’s
selfless. She has a tremendous amount of empathy for
her teammates, for her classmates, for her friends and
family and to me that character is what’s going to take
her a long way in life,” said Porter. “That’s a coach’s
dream - to have the competitiveness, the perseverance
and all of those skills wrapped up with a player who’s
selfless and all about the team and all about other peo
ple receiving the glory.”
Brady, who received scholarship offers from Berry
College and Reinhardt University, ultimately decided
on the latter to stay close to home.
“I went to the campus and I visited and just really fell
in love with the people there, the atmosphere and just
everything about it,” said Brady.
But the Defensive Specialist wasn’t always a volley
ball star. In fact, Brady has only been playing for the
past two years when the program was getting its feet on
the ground at the high school.
After being a lifelong basketball player, Brady want
ed to try something new and never expected that vol
leyball would become her big passion.
