In what was her last ribbon
cutting ceremony as director of
Parks and Recreation for
Dawson County, Lisa Henson
welcomed county employees,
county commissioners and
friends to the new pool house at
Veterans Memorial Park on
June 14.
After a quick tour of the
1,650-square-foot building,
which opened to the public
June 4, Henson cut the ribbon
for the new building, which has
replaced the pool house that
stood at the front entranced of
the park for over 40 years.
The new building is 550 feet
bigger than the old, with a new
“shack” for lifeguards so that
they can take up money, come
in out of the sun on rotation,
get a snack and sit in the air
conditioning- which is also a
new and probably the most
exciting feature for the whole
building.
The lifeguard shack is also
now separate from the conces
sions stand, which has a large
room of its own, currently
stocked with snacks to last the
season.
Restrooms for both men and
women contain cubbies for
storage as well as divided
showers. A storage room holds
equipment for aerobics classes
and swim lessons, and an auto
matic sunscreen dispenser, one
of many obtained for the coun
ty by A Divine Beauty
Boutique and Spa through a
grant, is mounted to the wall
between the restrooms.
Also new is an overhang that
shelters the right side and back
of the building, giving much
needed permanent shade for
concessions snackers and those
who need a break from the sun.
The pool was retiled, plas
tered and repainted five years
ago, and has been completely
redone two times since it was
built in the early 70s.
“This has been a vision of
ours for a long time and we’re
just really thankful,” Henson
said. “We’re getting great feed
back on the building and all of
the accommodations.”
The new building was con
structed with SPLOST VI
funds. Demolition of the old
building and construction of the
new building costs $485,000.
Pool hours are 12 p.m. to 5
p.m. weekdays through August
1, and weekends only Aug. 2
through Sept. 3. The cost is $3
per day and season passes are
available at Rock Creek Park
and online.
