The Dawson County public works and
fleet maintenance departments are look
ing forward to construction of a new
building complex at the transfer station
on Burt Creek Road.
The board of commissioners approved
a $2,644,127 bid from Charles Black
Construction Company for design and
construction services for a three-building
complex during a June 21 meeting.
Public Works Director David McKee pre
sented five bids to the board at a June 14
work session and described the scope of
the project.
Planned is a public works building that
will contain administrative offices as well
as the roads and bridges shop, as well as
a fleet maintenance facility with adminis
trative offices and garage areas.
The third building will be a brick and
mortar scale house.
“If you’re familiar with the transfer sta
tion, there are two mobile office trailers
that are out there now that function both
as a scale house and what was going to
be a temporary location for the public
works guys, and that was done about 7
and a half years ago,” McKee said.
In 2007, Pond and Company created
the master plan for the Fleet and Public
Works Complex and the county entered
into an intergovernmental agreement
with the board of education, which built
a bus maintenance facility.
A fueling center is also located on the
property and the board of education and
county have an intergovernmental agree
ment for that as well.
The transfer station is currently built
on a landfill that was closed in the late
1990s.
Construction is expected to start
around September or October, McKee
said.
The project will be funded by SPLOST
VI proceeds and from the solid waste
fund.
The transfer station will remain open
throughout the entire process.
