Riding arena called 'a gem' in Dawson
Couple wants to give back to community with Mountain View Stables and Arenas

Tucked away on Bailey Waters Road is
what many consider a hidden gem in
Dawson County.
Sitting on the site of the old Kangaroo
Conservation Center lays Mountain View
Stables, which lives up to its name, offer
ing beautiful views of the north Georgia
mountains landscape.
It’s been a labor of love for Michael and
Debbie Papaioanu, who saw the property
as an opportunity to give something back
to the community.
“I think my passion is bringing some
thing to Dawson County,” Debbie
Papaioanu said.
Papaioanu didn’t discover her passion
for riding horses until she was 64 years
old. Though her daughter, Lesli Gilbert,
rode throughout her childhood and teen
years, Papaioanu didn’t begin to take les
sons until her mid-sixties.
“I’m 69 so I’m moving on but I’m still
riding,” Papaioanu said.
The Papaioanus, originally from
Delaware, have lived in Georgia for 17

The Dawson County High School volleyball program hosted a summer camp at Rock Creek Park this
week to help instill a spark and passion for the sport in girls ages 10-14. On July 10 members of the
volleyball teams came out to the sports complex with head coach Tanya Porter to teach aspiring play
ers the skills they need, giving them the fundamentals of the game. From serving to spiking and prop
er passing techniques, the campers received an introduction to not only the sport but the high school
program as well.

FISHING REPORT
Bass moving
closer to lake’s
thermodine
By Eric Aldrich
Water Conditions: Lake Lanier is presently at
1,072.14 or 1.14 feet above the normal full pool of
1,071. Lake surface temperatures are in the mid
80s.
The main lake and lower lake creeks mouths are
clear to stained. The upper lake creeks, pockets and
the rivers are slightly stained to very stained.
Check generation schedules before heading out to
the river below Buford Dam at 770-945-1466.
The bass fishing has continued to be great one
day and tough the next. The deeper bite has really
just started and a lot of Lake Lanier’s bass are mov
ing closer to the thermocline that has set up in 27
feet of water.
There has been a little schooling action so contin
ue to keep a top water plug ready. We are still run
ning and gunning brush at 20 to 35-feet deep. Make
a cast or two over the brush with a top water plug or
swimbait. Then move up over the brush and use a
drop shot rig with a Big Bites Shakin’ Squirrel and
watch your electronics for the tell-tale “sketti” lines
that indicate a school of bass.
I have been playing around with a lot of the new
electronics we display at West Marine and there
really are no bad units. We display Humminbird,
Lowrance, Garmin, B&G and Simrad. Each manu
facturer has advantages in certain areas. I encourage
customers to play around with the buttons or touch
screens and see what setups are easier to use. Your
electronics are truly “fish finders” and you can
indeed use them to catch more fish!
