The bright banks of LED lights
surrounding Tiger Stadium
hummed to life for the first time
this season on Aug. 10 when the
Dawson County High School Tigers
hosted the North Forsyth Raiders in
a pre-season scrimmage.
The crowd arrived early for the
7:30 p.m. kick-off and the familiar
chaos that is a high school football
game slowly began to mount.
“See It! Believe it! Achieve it!
Together!” Character Coach Russell
Davis fired up the team with a pas
sionate pre-game sermon focusing
on the ideas of brotherhood and
teamwork.
“This will be a good test for our
team in a good environment,” said
third year North Forsyth Head
Coach Robert Craft. “It will be a
good chance to evaluate our person
nel.”
The Raiders received the opening
kick-off to start the game, and the
Tigers quickly settled down to busi
ness forcing a quick three and out.
Featuring the backfield combina
tion of quarterback Sevaughn Clark
and halfback Ahmad Kamara, the
Tigers began testing the Raider
defense with a combination of
inside runs and jet sweeps. Taking
advantage of a strong offensive line
that got stronger as the game went
on; the Tigers were able to score
quickly on a 49-yard scamper up
the middle by Clark with nine min
utes remaining in the first quarter.
The teams exchanged possessions
over the next five minutes of the
first quarter with both defenses
showing strength and speed against
the run and getting pressure in the
backfield. North Forsyth’s Honus
Wagner broke the defensive strug
gle with an interception late in the
first that positioned the Raiders for
their first score of the game.

Lady Tigers
beat Danes
for 1st win

The Dawson County High School Fady Tigers
softball season is well under way as the team
wrapped up a three-game home stand on Aug. 9
with a 9 - 1 victory over the Denmark High School
Danes.
The win is the first for the Fady Tigers in the
2018 season.
“It’s good to get the monkey off our back,” said
Head Coach Jimmy Pruett. “Fosing the first two
was tough.”
A jittery performance in the season opener on
Aug. 6 with White County saw the Fady Tigers
struggle with fielding, and the offense was slow to
come to life, putting up three runs late in the game.
The offensive drought continued when the
Chestatee War Eagles came to visit on Aug. 7 as the
Fady Tigers once again put up three runs in the
games later innings. Defensively, the unit looked
good, playing virtually error-free ball.
“The first two games weren’t us,” Pruett said
about the team’s difficulties. “It’s early in the sea
son and nerves have to be taken as a part of that.”
It all came together Aug. 9 as the Fady Tigers
opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning
with some solid contact on the ball and a fielder’s
choice that allowed Carol Drake to give the team
their first lead of the season.

Excited to become a part of Dawson County community
The most common question I
have been asked this week is
“Where are you from?”
It occurs to me that for most of
you I am a new face and a new
voice so, please, let me take a few
moments and tell you about
myself.
I grew up a military brat, and
subsequently consider myself not
really from anywhere. My dad
was bom and raised in Athens,
Ga. so we returned there between
assignments and called it home,
but I didn’t ever live there in any

sense of the word.
After high school, I briefly
attended the University of
Georgia, quickly discovering that
there was so much more to pur
sue on campus than academics.
My time at the university was
fun-filled, but short lived, and I
wound up enlisting in the Army
myself. I spent 10 years in uni
form, participating in the invasion
of Iraq in my final year of service.
Through a series of events that
life threw at me, I found myself
drawn into the management side
of the food service industry
where I spent the next 15 years
running all manner of restaurants;
from a Mom and Pop pizza deliv
ery store all the way up to, most
recently, the dining facility at the
University of North Georgia.
During that time, in addition to
raising my wonderful daughters
Emily and Ann, and gently irritat
ing my wife of 16 years, Frances,
I quietly pursued my desire to
write, talk and become a part of
the world of sports that I find to
be truly fascinating.
There is no other world where
in the course of one afternoon
you get the opportunity to see a
collection of people come togeth
er in pursuit of a common goal,
and give it their mind-boggling,
jaw-dropping, brain-breaking all,
giving every last ounce of effort
and sweat to not only achieve
greatness for themselves, but for
their team.
It’s an awesome world to be a
part of, and I am extremely excit
ed about becoming a part of the
Dawson County community.
Now, let’s get onto using this
space for its intended purpose.
