New road could ease traffic at UNG’s Oakwood campus

Drug Awareness and Recovery Expo Sept. 10

For the second year in a
row, Friends of Recovery
will be hosting a Drug
Awareness and Recovery
Expo in Dawson County to
provide information on the
effects of substance abuse
in the county.
The goal for the expo is
to provide information on
the drug epidemic, drugs in
school, the effects on the
family and resources that
focus on prevention and
recovery.
Special music for the
event will be provided by
the Dawson County High
School and Junior High
School choruses.
Special speakers will
include stories of recovery
and hope, a message from
the Dawson County
Sheriff’s Office, AA/
Al-Anon/Naranon and a
presentation of new
Georgia laws on drugs.

County High School.

A road expected to
ease traffic at the fast
growing University of
North Georgia campus in
Oakwood could be fin
ished by mid-October,
weather permitting.
The new Loop Road,
which has a December
completion date, will
connect Mundy Mill
Road and Facilities
Drive, an on-campus
road that leads to the
public safety building
and plant operations.
Mundy Mill motorists
will only be able to turn
right onto Loop Road,
and Loop Road motorists
will only be able to turn
right onto Mundy Mill.
The $1.3 million road,
which is part of the
UNG master plan, is
intended “to help traffic
flow on and off the cam
pus and improve student
safety,” said Bill Moody,
the campus’ facilities
and operations director.
“In prior years, it has
taken 30 minutes to get
off campus at peaks
times.”
“We feel it’s going to
mostly relieve exit con
gestion,” said Ken
Crowe, assistant vice
president of facilities.
“It’s kind of like a big
sporting event.
Everybody comes in at
different times, but they
leave at the same time.”

dents now use to drive
around campus are
Mathis Drive, Campus
Drive and Landrum
Education Drive, travel

“You’ve got this prob
lem (on campus) where
you have pedestrians
crossing — and they
have the right of way
and need to get to class
— but that holds traffic
up,” Crowe said.
