Softball season hits a snag with loss to East Hall

The Dawson County High School
softball team took to the diamond
for a match-up against the defend
ing region champs the East Hall
County Vikings Aug. 16, ending
with a 12-7 loss for the Tigers.
With Maggie Schandera on the
mound for the Lady Tigers, the
Vikings came to the plate and start
ed the scoring almost immediately
after a lead off double. Following
up with a pair of singles and aided
by an infield error from the Tigers,
the Vikings put two quick runs on
the board in the first inning.
East Hall’s Macy Banks stood
tall in the circle for the Vikings and
made quick work of the Tigers
behind a powerful fast ball.
Starting the second inning by
putting their lead runner on base
again, this time on a single, the
Vikings began the process of mov
ing the runner around the bases
aided once more by a series of
infield errors by the Tigers. After
driving in the one runner, and with
two outs left in the inning, the
Vikings managed to load the bases
for Kaitlyn Daniels who sent a tow
ering shot over the center field wall
for her first career grand slam and
sending the score to 8 - 0 with one
swing of the bat.

Opening the 2018 campaign with seven games
over 10 days, the Dawson County Lady Tigers vol
leyball team is rapidly coming together as a force to
be reckoned with on the courts.
This year’s team sees only four girls returning
from last year, and that inexperience showed during
the Mountain Madness Tournament on August 10 as
a lack of communication and cohesion led to 77
team errors in two matches.
Giving up 40 errors in their straight set loss to
Fannin County (25 - 19, 29 - 27) followed by 37
errors in another straight set loss to Gilmer County
(25 — 17, 26 — 24), was not the beginning anticipat
ed by Head Coach Tanya Porter.
“Many new girls in a varsity situation, there are a
lot of nerves,” she explained, “Volleyball is a game
of momentum. We never had it in those first two.”

As the opening coin
toss tumbled to the turf
and fans cheered madly
for that tiny sliver of
metal it was evident that
all northeast Georgia had
been waiting for this day.
The Dawson County
High School Tigers
opened the varsity foot
ball season with a visit to
John Larry Black Field at
Habersham Central High
School on Friday, August
17 and closed out with a
win over the Raiders.
Winning the opening
toss, the Habersham
Raiders deferred the ball
to the second half. The
Dawson County Tigers
put the setting sun at their
backs and after taking the
opening kick-off out to
their own 22-yard line,
sent the offense onto the
field for the first time in
2018.
Featuring a backfield
duo of seniors in quarter
back Sevaughn Clark and
running back Ahmad
Kamara, the Tigers quick
ly began to test the defen
sive front with a series of
runs up the middle,
breaking off yardage in
three and five-yard
chunks.
Continuing to wear
down the Raider defense
and slowly working the
ball to the outside paid
off on the opening drive
as Kamara broke loose
around the right side for
28-yards to take the ball
into the end zone. With
just over seven minutes to
play in the first quarter,
the Tigers took an early 7
- 0 lead.
Relying more on a
short passing game, the
Raiders offense took the
field for their first posses
sion of the game and
quickly demonstrated
how dangerous a team
they could be. After haul
ing in a short pass from
Raider quarterback Luke
Wilson, wide receiver
Donovan Curry scram
bled and ducked his way
75 yards through the
Tigers secondary to tie
the game at 7.
With seven minutes
remaining on the clock,
the Tigers offense took to

Over 250 cycling enthusiasts rolled into
Dawsonville July 28 for the sixth annual ‘Shine
Pedalers Metric bike ride.
Organized by the Dawson County Chamber of
Commerce, the ride starts and finishes at the
Georgia Racing Hall of Fame. Featuring two routes
through the rolling hills of Dawson County, the ride
is a unique way to see the countryside.
“This is one of our top ways to showcase our
community, to get people thinking about
Dawsonville differently,” said Chamber President
Christie Moore. “The goal each year is to add more
riders, more [Supply and Gear] stops and more
community sponsors.”
The full metric, measuring 62 miles, was recom
mended for advanced riders not only due to the
extra distance, but because it features a grueling
climb up Burnt Mountain in Jasper.
Ascending some 3,000 feet over just a few miles,
this portion of the ride was not for the faint of heart,
although the view of the north Georgia mountains
that awaited riders at the top was well worth the
effort.
Taking an equally scenic route, the half metric, a
