Mothers Against
Methamphetamine
meets the second
Thursday of each month
at 7 p.m. at New Hope
United Methodist Church
in Cumming. MAM is a
support group for those
whose loved ones have
fallen victim to this highly
addictive drug. In addition
to providing Christian
support, they provide
resources for education.
All are invited to come
and educate themselves
for the sake of their
friends and family.

Abba House is a
Christian church with a
ministry for women with
addiction or mental
health problems. After an
orientation period,
women who receive min
istry can bring their
young children to live and
heal with them. AH is one
of the few programs
where children can join
mothers as they are
receiving ministry for
addiction. On the border
of Dawson and Forsyth
counties, AH is the safe
home many women have
never had. Local churches
and companies that part
ner with AH will have col
lection days where indi
viduals can bring food,
clothing, baby items and
furniture to help support
the ministries. Local
churches will provide
vouchers that can be
redeemed at Abba's
Treasures, a store Abba
House has opened at
6800 Dahlonega Highway
in Silver City. Needed
items are food, clothing,
baby clothing, baby beds,
strollers, most other baby
items, sofas, dressers,
chairs, tables and other
furniture. All donations
are approved by the IRS
as tax deductible. For

A mental health advo
cacy group will offer
free educational classes
for family and friends of
individuals living with a
mental illness. The local
affiliate of the National
Alliance on Mental
Illness, or NAMI, will
offer the family-to-family

will continue at the same

Opportunity will soon
begin the annual Energy
Assistance Program
(LIHEAP), where citizens
can apply for assistance
with home heating bills.
Appointments can be
scheduled beginning
Nov. 1 and is open only
to seniors 65 and older
and shut-ins of any age.
All those who do not
meet the above criteria
will be able to call on
Dec. 1 to schedule their
appointments. The
Georgia Department of
Human Services will help
pay the heating costs for
gas or electric for eligible
applicants.
The next Pups in the
Park Dog Show and
Festival, hosted by the
Dawson County Humane
Society, is scheduled for
April 13, 2019.The event

Parents of preschool
children who suspect
developmental delays
may have their children
screened by the Dawson
County School System.
The screening covers
five areas of develop
mental growth including
motor skills, adaptive
behavior, social/emotion
al skills, speech/language
and cognitive skills.
Parents must be resi
dents of Dawson County
to be eligible. For more

School system to host inaugural learning academy

If there is anything you
ever wanted to know
about the Dawson
County school system,
your chance to have all
those burning questions
answered is coming up.
The Dawson County
School System will be
hosting its inaugural
IDawson Learning
Academy next month for
parents and community
members to learn more
about each and every
department of the school
system.
After introductions
from Superintendent
Damon Gibbs, each
department head will
have an opportunity to
present in front of the
audience. Questions will
be taken after all of the
presentations.
“The Learning
Academy will provide
our community with an
opportunity to learn
more about each of the
operational areas of the
school system,” Gibbs
said. “We are excited to
kick off this new learning
opportunity for the resi-
dents of Dawson
County.”
The learning academy
will take place over two
Tuesdays, from 4 p.m. to
6 p.m. Sept. 11 and Sept.
18 at the Professional
Development Center at
30 Main Street.
Those interested in
attending are asked to
come to both days,
though it is not required.
On Sept. 11, partici
pants will hear from the
finance, human resourc
es, facilities, transporta
tion, operations and safe
ty and nutrition depart
ments.
On Sept. 18, the tech
nology, teaching and
learning, testing and
SI&A, student services
and exceptional children
departments will be pre
senting information
about their programs.
