Lady Tigers up and down for week
By Bob Christian

As the season continues to move
toward regional play, the Dawson
County volleyball team played four
games over two matches before the
Labor Day weekend.
Playing against the ladies from
Chestatee and Lumpkin counties on
Tuesday, Aug. 28 at Chestatee High
School in Gainesville, the Lady
Tigers continued to demonstrate the
grit and determination that has
become characteristic throughout the
season by winning both matches in
three sets.
“I think it was the best they played
all season,” Coach Tanya Porter said.
“They were determined not to lose.”
Bathing with some ferocious com
petition from the War Eagles, the
Tigers managed to pull out the first
set by the slimmest of margins with a
score of 25-23. Chestatee fought
back in the second set and won with
a quick 25-11, but Dawson County
prevailed in a tough final set 25-19
to take the match by a final of 2-1.
“Towards the end their adrenaline
crashed out,” Porter said. “But they
dug in and fought it out.”
Lumpkin County was the next
opponent of the night and would
prove equally as tough. After build
ing an 11-point lead in the first set,
the Indians went on to secure the win
by a final of 25-18. Clearly not done
for the night, the Tigers took to the
court behind 13 straight service
points from Hannah Waddy as they
dominated the second set with a
score of 25-19.
The last set proved to be the most
dramatic and demanding as the teams
fought through six game points to
come to the final score of 30-28 in
favor of Dawson County, giving
them the match victory and wrapping
up a two-win night at Chestatee.

six losses and carrying the momen-

3-2 win in close
game at home

Approaching the mid
point of the season, the
Dawson County Tigers
softball team played host
to the Fannin County High
School Rebels Aug. 28 at
Jack Waldrip Field, win
ning a nail-biting pitcher’s
duel by the final score of
3-2.
Senior pitcher Maggie
Schandera once again
took to the circle for the
Tigers in her 10th appear
ance. Driving her fastball
down the center of the
plate, Schandera immedi
ately challenged the
Rebels at the plate and
forced a quick three-and-
out, retiring the side.
Pitching in her first start
of the season, Fannin
County’s Amelia Sneed
faced the Tigers’ lead-off
batter Carol Drake who
immediately put the first
pitch of the game on a
rope to left field for her
first hit of the night.
Stealing her ninth base of
the season, Drake
advanced to second on the
next pitch and the Tigers
were in a great position to
start the game.
A routine grounder for
the first out of the inning
advanced Drake to third,
but then Sneed settled
down at the rubber and
struck out Schandera to
take the pressure off the
Rebels. Another grounder
and the inning closed with
no runs tallied.
The second inning start
ed well for the Rebels
with back-to-back singles
but, once again driving her
fastball down the middle,
Schandera dropped the
next three batters record
ing a strike out in the pro
cess. In return, Sneed,
nabbing two strike-outs of
her own, retired the Tigers
in order, keeping the game
scoreless after two
innings.
The Tigers put on a
quick but solid defensive
display in their half of the
third by collecting sharply
hit balls from all over the
in-field. Plays from first,
third and shortstop once
again put the Rebels to
bed and the Tigers took
their turn at the plate.
A pop-out from the
Tigers started the inning
and it looked as if Sneed’s
pitching was going to
once again make quick
work of Dawson County,
but, showing great
patience at the plate,
senior Mary Farris drew a
walk and took her place at
first base. A double from
Drake moved them both
into scoring position, and

Faced with their first test of the season, the
Dawson County cross country program traveled to
Chestatee Middle School in Gainesville for the 15th
Annual War Eagle Invitational along with 21 other
teams from around northeast Georgia on Aug. 28.
With the varsity boys placing second overall and
the girls team placing third, Coach Charles Beusse
was pleased with the day’s results but saw areas for
improvement.
“We made some mistakes which is to be expected
in the first race,” Beusse said. “I also saw some run
ners step up.”
Cody Wood led the men’s team completing the
5K with a time of 17 minutes 27 seconds, placing
him as third overall on the day. Wood was closely
followed by Ben McGinnis whose time of 17:33 put
him sixth for the day. Rounding out the top five for
Dawson were Wiley Dennis (18:29), Fuke Hamby
(18:45) and Will Mulberry (19:03).

Entering the 23rd season under Head Coach Kim
Fleming, the Dawson County competitive cheer team
used the summer to steadily prepare for what could be
one of their best seasons.
“We have a history of a very successful program,”
Fleming said. “This is the strongest team Dawson has
had in a long time.”
Setting the standard for this year’s team is Nicole
Mulkey. Currently a senior at Dawson County High
School, Mulkey has been participating in some form of
cheering since the age of 3.
“I used to do cartwheels,” Mulkey said. “So, my par
ents enrolled me in cheerleading when I was little.”
Fourteen years later Mulkey has qualified as one of
16 finalists for the Georgia All-State Cheer team.
