The Dawson County Lady
Tigers softball team took to the
diamond of Jack Waldrip Field
twice this past week, emerging
with a victory in one and a loss
in the other.
The first game took place Sept.
11 when the ladies hosted rival
Lumpkin County High School
Indians.
The “pinked-out" ’ stadium, fes
tooned with pink ribbons and
pink balloons to promote breast
cancer awareness, was packed to
capacity as fans from both coun
ties watched the Indians win a
tough fight by the final score of
7-5.
Broadcast live by North
Georgia Sports Link, the game
had the aura of a professional
event and the stadium came to
life as the Tigers spread out
brightly across the field to open
the first inning behind senior
Maggie Schandera, who stood in
the circle for her thirteenth start
of the season.
The first inning ended with
both teams pushing one run
across the plate. The Lady Tigers
scored their ran with stolen bases
and sacrificed batters while the
Indians pushed theirs across with
brute force on a blistering triple
followed by a left-field single to
score their point.
The second inning featured
solid pitching from both sides
and ended scoreless, leaving the
score tied at 1 as the third inning
started with Lumpkin County at
the plate.

feated Danes, and the
Tigers emerged with a
38-21 win that moved
them to 4 and 0 on the sea

Prior to kickoff, the
teams looked to be equally
matched on paper.
The Tiger offense, fea
turing senior quarterback
SeVaughn Clark and senior
running back Ahmad
Kamara, had outscored
their first three opponents
of the season by a com
bined score of 135-42.
Together Clark and
Kamara have accounted for
10 of the team’s 16 rushing
touchdowns, while Clark
has thrown for two more
scores.
“They play a lot of two-
back offense,” said Danes’
defensive coordinator Mike
Hollis about the traveling
competition. “They are an
extremely physical team.”
On the opposite side of
the ball, the Danes offense
looked to be a challenge
for the Dawson County
defense, led by seniors Zac
Baloga and Logan Barnes,
having racked up their own
impressive scoring ratio of
89-35 in their trio of con
tests.
“[The Danes are] a team
of good athletes,” said
Brent Cox, defensive coor
dinator for the Tigers. “We
can’t let them expose us.
We just need to do our
jobs.”
The Danes defense had
been well prepared for the
game as the Tigers strug
gled to move the ball down
field on their opening drive.
After Kamara finally
managed to break free
around the outside into the
end zone for what appeared
to be the Tigers’ first
touchdown of the night, a

Dawson County High School boys’ varsity soccer
coach Derek Waters resigned effective Sept. 11,
according to Athletic Director Jason Gibson.
The head coach of the Dawson County Middle
School team, Patrick Meunchen, has
been named as his replacement for the
upcoming season.
“Coach Waters did an outstanding
job during an incredibly difficult time
with our soccer program,” Gibson
said. “We appreciate his willingness
to step in after Coach Lacey’s passing
and continue to lead our boys’ soccer
program.”
Waters, an assistant coach with the
program for six years, took over as head coach after
then-Head Coach Jed Lacey was killed in a car wreck
in August 2017. Waters led the team deep into the
Sweet 16 round of the playoffs before ending the sea
son with a loss to North Murray High School.
“It was a tremendous blessing and honor to be able
