FROM 1B
Softball
game series started with a dou
ble-header.
The teams exchanged runs in
the early innings but solid pitch
ing from both Amanda Sneed of
the Rebels and senior Maggie
Schandera of the Tigers kept the
game even until the late innings.
The difference proved to be an
ugly sixth inning for the Dawson
County squad that allowed the
Rebels to put four runs on the
board. A last inning surge by the
Tigers added two runs to their
total but a final score of 6-3 gave
game one to the Rebels.
Game two started off featuring
the same strong pitching from
Sneed and Schandera that held
both teams scoreless until the
third inning when the Tigers’
bats came to life. Sparked by
powerful multi-base hits from
sophomore Bella Henson and
senior Brandi Williams the Lady
Tigers pushed runs across the
plate to take the late game lead
and held on to win by a score of
4—2.
Having split the double-head
er, the two teams met for one
final, winner-take-all game on
Monday, Oct 1. In an odd twist,
the Lady Tigers lost the coin
toss, so they took the first at bats
as the visiting team in their home
stadium. Taking full advantage
of the opportunity, the Lady
Tigers displayed a confidence
and swagger that had been miss
ing from the earlier games and
caught the Rebels off guard.
Led by their core group of
seniors Lauren Tow, Carol
Drake, Schandera and Williams,
who all recorded multiple hits,
the Lady Tigers blasted the ball
all over the yard as the Tigers put
runs on the board during their
first four at-bats.
In an effort to stop the
onslaught the Rebels changed
pitchers but, after only facing
two batters, they returned their
original pitcher to the mound.
This quick exchange seemed to
do the trick as it marked a turn
ing point in the game and the
Lady Tigers bats went quiet.
The Tigers defense was put to
the test over the last three innings
as Fannin County proved resur
gent in their attempt to avoid
elimination. Suddenly it was
their bats that were hot and the
Lady Tigers faced an onslaught
of late inning contact and hits.
Inning by inning the Rebels
closed the gap. Two runs in the
fifth. Two more runs in the
sixth, and suddenly it was the
bottom of the seventh and they
were only down by 2. The Lady
Tigers spoiled the dramatic fin
ish with a quick one-two-three,
and as the last out fell into
Drake’s glove they surged the
field to celebrate their hard
fought 7-5 victory.
The Dawson County Lady
Tigers played in the Regional
Finals on Wednesday, Oct. 3.
The first game takes place at 11
a.m. versus the East Hall Lady
Vikings.

“Gainesville has a real

Coach Tanya Porter.
“Nothing gets down to
the floor.”
Dawson County next
hosted the North Hall
Lady Trojans on Tuesday,
Sept. 25 in a battle for
first place in the region.
Coming out strong the
Lady Tigers took an early
lead in the first set only to
see it disappear late as the
Lady Trojans fought back
to take the set by a score
of 25-23. With a team
leading 11 kills junior
Chloe Bennett led the
Tigers to win the second
set by the same score and
forced a third set.
“Errors in set three
proved to be the differ
ence,” Porter said. “We
fell way short in the final
set.”
Those errors were cost
ly as North Hall went on
to win the set by a score
of 25-14 and the match
two sets to one. North
Hall moved into sole pos
session of first place in
the region with the win.
After the disappointing
loss to North Hall, the
Lady Tigers once again
played host on Thursday,
Sept. 27 this time wel
coming the Red
Elephants from
Gainesville for another
best of five match-up.
Despite a best-of-sea-
son performance from
junior Harmony Evans,
who was able to spike the
ball at will against the
Red Elephants back line,
the Lady Tigers were
unable to get past the
excellent defense put up
by the girls from
Gainesville and dropped
the second match of the
season in three sets.
“These games are good
for mental and physical
stamina,” Porter said. “It
should help us in the long
run.”

unit in a series of events
designed to test their cohe
siveness, coordination, dis
cipline and physical fit
ness. Schools could ran as
many teams as they want
ed to run and a total of 38
teams participated in the
event with most schools
running two men’s teams
and a single female and
mixed team.
“There is no individual
score,” said Instructor
Steve Pamplin. “When the
last person crosses the line
that is when the team is
finished.”
Starting with a timed
team run, each group then
moved as fast as possible
through an obstacle course,
a sand-bag relay, a simulat
ed casualty carry, a tire-
flipping race and building
and traversing a rope
bridge.
“The event is designed
to be similar to the type of
training that Rangers do in
the army,” said Pamplin.
The level of exertion
necessary to complete the
course was evident in the
Dawson County Raiders as
they recovered after their
morning run through the
course. Each member of
the team looked tired and
physically run down but
thrilled about their perfor
mance overall.
“I feel like we did really
well as a team,” said
Battalion Commander
Cadet LTC Noah Stapp.
“We finished the obstacle
course in around three
minutes, and that’s pretty
good.”
In fact, the three-minute
time was good enough for
a second-place finish for
the Dawson County Raider
men’s team in the obstacle
course. Dawson County’s
mixed team also took
home hardware on the day
by grabbing a second place
finish in the tire-flip race.
The overall awards for
the day went to Riverside
Military Academy in the
male category, Norcross
High School in the mixed
team events and South
Gwinnett High School in
the female division.
