Tax commissioner’s office receives awards for Relay for Life fundraising From staff reports “It is amazing how hard it is to get whipped cream out of your hair,” said Dawson County Tax Commissioner Nicole Stewart. Stewart, whose office was recently awarded Best Activity for last April’s Relay for Life event, took part in the pie-in-the-face contest involving several local elected officials. Hours after getting pied herself, Stewart said it took three hair washings to remove the dairy prod uct completely. “We should’ve used non-dairy,” she said. She laughed and admitted it was well worth it. The award was given on Sept. 15 along with a gold team award for the group who reached that status by raising over $5,000 of support for Relay for Life. Fundraising efforts by the office increased by $1,000 over the previous year. The pie-in-the-face activity brought in right at $300 on its own by offering up $1 plates of whipped cream for citi zens to go after the offi cials. “It was great,” Stewart said. “Thank you to all the elected officials who helped and were great sports. We had fun and are looking forward to next year.” Stewart is hoping to repeat in the 2019 event by winning best activity again but is tight-lipped about plans. She said that the group is currently brainstorming ideas. The annual team fund raising event features team members taking turns walking around a track for anywhere from six to 24 hours. Each team must have a mem ber on the track through out the duration to signify that cancer never sleeps. Teams come up with themed booths at the event and collect dona tions for food, games, goods and activities. Money collected goes to the team’s overall goal. Next year’s event will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. on April 26 at Veterans Memorial Park. In the meantime, cus tomers of the tax com missioner’s office are able to contribute by pur chasing small feet and cupcakes to post on the office walls. Donations of any amount are welcome.
