Volleyball
team as the Vikings broke serve to
open an early lead that they quick
ly moved to a 25-16 final score.
The second set opened with
another burst of scoring from the
Vikings and the Lady Tigers quick
ly found themselves in a hole once
more. Led by an outstanding per
formance from sophomore Oliva
Walls, who was able to set any ball
perfectly for her teammates to
smash into the East Hall defense,
Dawson County came from behind
to take the second set on the win
ning side of 25-16.
Junior Chloe Bennett secured
four points on the opening serve of
the third set and the Lady Tigers
cruised to a large early lead and
looked poised to win the match
outright. A late set surge that fea
tured the Vikings putting up 9 con
secutive points kept everybody on
edge, but the team held on to their
lead and closed out the set with a
tally of 25-18.
The three-set victory ensured the
Dawson County Tigers at least the
fourth seed for the state tourna
ment and provided them the oppor
tunity to improve their position as
they advanced to the third round of
the regional tournament to face the
top-seeded North Hall Trojans.
From the opening serve North
Hall’s defense, led by junior Grace
Hollifield, dominated the center of
the net and prevented the Lady
Tigers from gathering any momen
tum during the opening set which
was quickly won by North Hall
with a final score of 25-12.
The Trojan offense demonstrated
a familiarity with the court that
comes from home-field advantage
and placed their serves and drives
just out of reach of the Tigers
throughout the second set.
Hollifield continued to own the net
leading to another rapid set for the
Trojans to secure the match in their
favor in two sets.
The loss moved the Lady Tigers
into the consolation game in con
trol of their own destiny as they
faced off with the East Hall
Vikings for a second time on the
day with each team’s tournament
future on the line.
Having fought all the way back
around the bracket from their first-
round loss, the East Hall Vikings
came out on fire and took quick
advantage of the Lady Tigers (who
seemed to be still suffering the
effects of their second-round loss)
to grab a 25-10 first set victory.
A re-energized Dawson County
unit fought hard in the second set,
but Vikings continued to ride their
momentum and held on to an early
lead to win the set 25-20 and elim
inated the Dawson County Tigers
from the regional tournament in
fourth place overall.
The 7-AAA Area tournament
ended with the North Hall Trojans
winning it all on their home court
with a 3-1 victory over the East
Hall Vikings.
Dawson County will next see
action when they take on Murray
County in the first round of the
state tournament on Oct. 20 in
Calhoun.

with more energy and
mounted a credible threat,
moving a runner into
scoring position before
the Yellow Jackets closed
out the inning. The sec
ond inning played much
the same, as both sides
threatened but neither
managed to score.
It was in the third
inning that the offense of
Calhoun came back to life
as back-to-back singles
combined with a catching
error from Tori Martin
allowed the Yellow
Jackets to break the score
less tie. Two batters later
another three-run homer,
this one from Calhoun’s
Lona Davis, moved the
score to 4-0.
After the Yellow
Jackets retired Dawson
County in order in the
bottom of the third, it
appeared that the game
had settled into the same
pattern as the first game
of the night, but the
Tigers mustered their
strength and returned the
favor with a double-play
to shut down the Yellow
Jackets in the fourth and
gave themselves new life.
The bottom of the
fourth inning marked the
high point of the tourna
ment for the Lady Tigers
as they came out of the
gate swinging. Singles
from Schandera and
Bella Henson opened the
inning and freshman
Olivia Martinez took full
advantage of the opportu
nity as she pounded a
monster three-run shot
over the wall to bring the
Dawson County Tigers
within one run.
Unfortunately for the
Tigers, a Calhoun pitch
ing change silenced their
bats once again, and a
collection of errors from
across the diamond
allowed the Yellow
Jackets to immediately
extend their lead in the
fifth inning.
The game remained
within reach for Dawson
County until the final
inning when Calhoun
finally took control of the
game with a five-run
onslaught to close out the
first round with a final
score of 11-3 and a clean
sweep of the Lady Tigers
to end the 2018 softball
season.

“But not by much.”
A bigger concern for
the teams was an early
season flu that deprived
both teams of strong run
ners. The men’s team
entered the day without
runner Nico Poston,
while the girl’s team
found themselves short
Avery Young. Illness also
forced the decision to
have Cody Wood run at a
work-out pace instead of
his normal racing pace,
and he still managed to
post the team’s third fast
est time on the day.
“I felt like the boys had
a decent showing consid
ering we were not racing
at full strength,” Beusse
said. “I’m sure that hav
ing [Avery Young] out on
Saturday did impact the
team score for our girls.”
Having found himself
thrust into the lead run
ner position on the day,
junior Ben McGinnis
rose to the challenge and
posted his best time on
the season at 16:14.69, a
mere 9.7 seconds off the
lead pace set by the over
all winner Devin Wade
out of Pope High School.
McGinnis’ third place
finish gave the team the
edge they needed to
squeeze out a top-five
finish out of a field of 25
teams as he was followed
by teammates Wiley
Dennis, Will Mulberry
and Luke Hamby across
the line as scoring run
ners.
“There is work to be
done prior to region and
state,” Beusse said. “I
feel that our boys are
driven and understand
the task at hand and will
show up when the time
comes.”
Finishing second over
all in a field 189 individ
ual runners, senior
Frankie Muldoon led the
girl’s team with her time
of 19:26.07. Despite
strong individual races
from Molly Muenchen,
Isabelle Kinsey and Bri
Ray, all of whom have
showed great improve
ment on the season
according to Beusse, the
team was outpaced by
the other teams and fin
ished a disappointing
13th on the day.
“We aren’t going to let
a bad day at Pickens get
us down. In sports the
only important event is
the next one ahead of
you,” Beusse said. “Our
sole focus at this point in
time is on region next
Thursday [Oct. 25].”
The teams will race at
Unicoi State Park in
Helen.

Super
Dragons quickly put 6
points on the board in
what was an otherwise
scoreless quarter.
The second and third
quarters of the game were
all Pickens County as the
Tigers continued to give
up the ball and allowed
the Dragons to start on
their side of the field on
almost every offensive
possession. As the fourth
quarter began the Dawson
County team was facing a
32-0 deficit.
Rising up to the test of
character, the young men
from Dawson County put
together two late game
drives to demonstrate a
fighting spirit to the very
end, but ultimately time
ran out on the Tigers and
the Pickens County
Dragons claimed victory
with a final score of
38-12.
“The coaches were very
proud of the team and
their attitude even in
defeat,” said seventh
grade team Head Coach
Terry Haymond.
“Dawson never gave up
and scored a couple touch
downs at the end.”
The night’s second
game featured an eighth
grade Dawson County
team that had run the
table during the regular
season and entered the
game as the top-seeded
team from the play-offs.
They were taking on the
Fannin County Rebels,
who had cruised into the
post season with the num
ber two berth after suffer
ing an opening season
loss to these same Tigers.
The Tigers certainly
appeared to be on their
way to a decisive win as
the Dawson County
defense once again
showed their domination
along the line and held
the Rebels to only 6
points in the first half. On
the other side of the ball
the rushing attack of the
Tigers moved them effi
ciently down field and as
the second quarter closed
the score was Dawson
County 20 to Fannin
County’s 6.

going into the game was
the boys bringing focus
and intensity to the game
for two reasons. First,
Dawson County was on
fall break all week.
Change in routine always
has its risks. Second,
beating a team twice is
always much harder than
the first time,” said eighth
grade Head Coach Trevor
Duba. “We played Fannin
the first game of the sea
son and beat them pretty
decisively. I was worried
players would become
complacent, thinking it
was a ‘sure thing’ that we
were going to win the
championship.”
The second half almost
turned tragic for Dawson
County as the mid-game
adjustments by the
Rebel’s coaching staff
completely shut down the
normally powerful Tiger
offense.
Fortunately for Dawson
County the defense
remained strong through
out the game and held off
the Rebel’s final charge to
win Super Bowl II by a
final score of 20-14.

Soldier is a sweet and loving boy,
although he tends to want to be by your
side than anywhere else. He can be very
choosy with other dogs, therefore a
meet and greet would be highly
recommended. He walks fairly well on a
leash but could use some more
attention on pulling. Come see if this
boy is right for you.
Foxy Loxy
DOB: 7/5/13
WEIGHT: 47lbs
Foxy Loxy is one of out smartest and loyal
fur babies. She listens well and walks okay
on a leash. She is shy with new people, but
once she gets used to you and knows who
you are, she will be glued to your side. After
a nice walk she'll sit right next to you while
taking in her surroundings. Although she
doesgreat with people she does not get
along with other dogs at all. Don't let that
stop you from coming and saying hi. You may
just fall in love.
