DCHS students inducted into National Honor Society

Nineteen students
from Dawson County
High School were
inducted into member
ship of the National
Honor Society in a cere
mony held at the
Performing Arts Center
on Sept. 12.
The National Honor
Society is the nation’s
premier organization
recognizing outstanding
high school students
who demonstrate excel
lence in the areas of
scholarship, leadership,
service, citizenship and
character.
Members were select
ed by a Faculty Council
for meeting these high
standards.
“National Honor
Society members are
chosen for and then
expected to continue
their exemplary contri
butions to the school and
community,” said Laura
Hendrix, chapter advisor.
The Dawson County
High School Chapter has
been active since 2005.
“National Honor
Society is an incredible
opportunity for students
to make a lasting impact
in our community,” said
Hunter Voyles, public
relations coordinator and
member. “Students in the
organization are avidly
involved in making a dif
ference in our communi
ty, because we are a ser
vice-based organization.”
The National Honor
Society ranks as one of
the oldest and most pres
tigious national organiza
tions for high school stu
dents. Chapters exist in
more than 60 percent of
the nation’s high schools
and, since 1921, millions
of students have been
selected for membership.
Millions of dollars in
scholarships have been
awarded to senior mem
bers since 1945 by spon
soring organizations, the
National Association of
Secondary School
Principals (NASSP).

The Dawson County Schools Financial Department received the Award of
Distinction for Excellent Financial Reporting from the Georgia Department of
Audits and Accounts for the fifth consecutive year during the board of edu
cation's work session Oct. 2.
Dawson County Schools receives
award for financial reporting

During the board of education’s
October work session, the finance
department was recognized with an
achievement that only nine other school
districts in the state have achieved.
Finance Director Jamie Ulrich and her
team Sherri Autry, Beth Covington and
Gail Lowman were awarded the Award
of Distinction for Excellent Financial
Reporting by the Georgia Department of
Audits and Accounts for the fifth con
secutive year.
The award began in 2013 as a way to
recognize organizations that submit
quality financial statements and support
ing documentation in a timely manner
and whose annual financial report is
given an unmodified audit option and is
free of any significant deficiencies or
material weaknesses and complies with
all Transparency in Government require
ments.
Dawson County Schools has received
the award every year since its inception
and is one of 10 school districts to do
so.
Audit Supervisor Mary Dilbeck, who
has worked on Dawson County’s audit
with Ulrich and her team for 17 years,
presented the award at the work session
Oct. 2.
“People fight over this audit because
they know when they get here it’s going
to be clean, it’s going to be done and it’s
going to be a wonderful experience,”
Dilbeck said.
Of all the audits that Dilbeck’s office
does every year, Dilbeck said Ulrich is
the best financial director.
“I couldn’t do what I do without the
people in my department,” Ulrich said.
“They do their tasks: running all the
payroll, pulling down all the QBE, all
the grants, running all the vendor pay
ments and making sure we’re making all
those payments on time, getting our
supplies and getting all the necessary
items and requests from our different
schools and different directors — that’s
a tremendous effort and I couldn’t do it
without them.”
