More than half of Dawson voters cast ballots in election

Geoff Duncan (Rep) 86.76 percent

cent

show Duncan won with 51.67percent
of the vote.
Secretary of State:
Brad Raffensperger (Rep) 84.27 per
cent
John Barrow (Dem) 13.71 percent
Smyth Duval (Lib) 2.03 percent
The race between Raffensperger and
Barrow will proceed to the Dec. 4 run
off as neither candidate received
more than 50 percent of the vote
statewide.
Attorney General:
Chris Carr (Rep) 86.01 percent
Charlie Bailey (Dem) 13.99 percent
Unofficial statewide election results
show Carr won with 51.35percent of
the vote.
Commissioner of Agriculture:
Gary Black (Rep) 87.50 percent
Fred Swann (Dem) 12.5 percent

Constitutional Amendment #1:
Creates the Georgia Outdoor
StewardshipTrust fund to protect
water quality, wildlife habitat and
parks. Passed statewide with 82.88
percent of the vote; Dawson County
voted 77.95 percent in favor.
Constitutional Amendment #2:
Creates a state-wide business court to
lower costs, enhance efficiency and
promote predictable judicial out
comes. Passed statewide with 69 per
cent of the vote; Dawson County
voted 65.90 percent in favor.
Constitutional Amendment #3:
Encourages the conservation, sustain
ability and longevity of Georgia's
working forests through tax subclassi
fication and grants. Passed statewide
with 62.17 percent of the vote;
Dawson County voted 59.28 percent in
favor.
Constitutional Amendment #4:
Provides rights for victims of crime in
the judicial process. Passed statewide
with 80.91 percent of the vote;
Dawson County voted 76.49 percent in
favor.
Constitutional Amendment #5:
Authorizes fair allocation of sales tax
proceeds to county and city schools.
Passed statewide with 71.23 percent of
the vote; Dawson County voted 63.61
percent in favor.
Statewide Referendum A: Provides
for a homestead exemption for resi
dents of certain municipal corpora
tions. Passed statewide with 57.08 per
cent of the vote; Dawson County
voted 50.68 percent in favor.
Statewide Referendum B: Provides
a tax exemption for certain homes for
the mentally disabled. Passed state
wide with 76.92 percent of the vote;
Dawson County voted 71.22 percent in
favor.
Dawson County election results were
not certified as of press time.

Voter turnout was 63 percent
in Dawson County after 4,119
people cast their ballots on
Nov. 6 for the general election.
Overall, 11,595 Dawson
County voters cast ballots out
of the 18,278 registered active
voters.
Glenda Ferguson, director of
the Dawson County Board of
Elections and Registration,
said that wait times at the
three precincts Nov. 6 were 30
minutes or less.
“Lines were steady and
there were wait times, but [it
all] went fairly smooth,” she
said.
During the last midterm
elections in 2014, 7,366
Dawson County voters cast
ballots, about 55.3 percent of
registered active voters at the
time.
In the 2016 presidential
election, 11,860 ballots were
cast, about 81 percent of regis
tered voters.
Not surprisingly, Dawson
County voted overwhelmingly
for Republicans on Nov. 6,
with 85.94 percent voting for
Republican candidate for
Governor Brian Kemp and
13.12 percent for Democratic
candidate Stacey Abrams.
Libertarian candidate Ted
Metz pulled 0.94 percent of
the vote.
As of press time it was
undetermined if the race
would proceed to a runoff or
recount with Kemp receiving
50.27 percent of the vote state
wide while Abrams received
48.79.
Dawson County helped re-
elect District 9 U.S.
Representative Doug Collins
to a fourth term with 86.51
percent of the county’s vote
going to him over Democratic
challenger Josh McCall, who
garnered 13.49 percent.
Collins received 79.51 percent
of the vote overall and repre
sents Dawson, Banks, Elbert,
Lannin, Lranklin, Gilmer,
Habersham, Hall, Hart,
Jackson, Lumpkin, Madison,
Rabun, Stephens, Towns,
Union and White counties as
well as parts of Clarke,
Lorsyth and Pickens counties.
Dawson County also voted
in favor of District 7 State
Representative David Ralston,
who will start his ninth term
after receiving 79.08 percent
of Dawson County’s vote as
opposed to Democratic chal
lenger Rick D. Day’s 20.92
percent. Ralston represents a
portion of Dawson County as
well as Gilmer and Lannin
counties and received 84.33
percent of the vote overall.
Several other local officials
were unchallenged on the Nov.
6 ballot. District 51 State
Senator Steve Gooch was re
elected to a fifth term while
District 9 State Representative
Kevin Tanner was re-elected to
a fourth term.
District Attorney Lee
Darragh was also re-elected.
Starting her second term in
January will be Dawson County
District 1 Commissioner Sharon
Lausett and starting his first
term will be Dawson County
District 3 Commissioner Tim
Satterfield. Re-elected to the
Dawson County Board of
Education at-large seat is Will
Wade for his fourth term and
again taking up the District 3
BOE seat is Karen Armstrong
for a second term.

dates through Dec. 1

accepted from 6-8 p.m.,
Nov. 15; 9 a.m. to noon
and 4-7 p.m., Nov. 17;
and 6-8 p.m., Dec. 1 at
the K.A.R.E. for Kids
office at 66 Hwy. 53
West, Dawsonville.

Dec. 1.

this Christmas season.

copies of each of the fol
lowing in order for appli
cations to be accepted: A
Georgia driver’s license
or valid state I.D.; proof
of residency (utility bill,
lease agreement, property
tax statement, tax return);
school report card (if
child or children are of
school age) or birth cer
tificate (if child or chil
dren are not of school
age); documentation from
day care or preschool in
the county; income verifi
cation for the last two
months for all persons
employed in the house
hold; and court docu
ments if you are the
guardian of the child or
children.
