PAC transforms into
magical forest for art show
By Jessica Taylor

The Performing Arts Center at Dawson
County High School was magically trans
formed into a forest full of more than 100
pieces of artwork last week for the annual
DCHS winter art show.
The theme “Magical Forest” lived up to
its name with lit up trees, painted creatures
and enchanting murals surrounding the
panels of art on display.
“I got the idea because I thought artwork
would fit perfectly within a magical forest
because art is magical and beautiful and so
is a forest with magical creatures,” said
director Julianne Jones during the art show
reception Dec. 6.
Jones, a senior, joined the DCHS Visual
Arts program during her junior year and
has been passionate about art since she
was littie.
“Art is important to me because it lets
me express myself in other ways I
wouldn’t be able to and it provides a cre
ative outlet,” Jones said. “It lets me be able
to let out any emotion I’m feeling like
stress or sadness or happiness, and I like to
be able to express it into my pieces.”
She takes inspiration from mythology
and enjoys using colored pencils, tempera
paint and oil pastels to bring her mythical
and monstrous creatures to life — some
thing that also influenced her theme idea.
“Magical Forest” is the first show Jones’
has directed but said overall she felt the
show went better than she expected.
“It takes a lot of hours of work, staying
after school until 7 p.m., or more like 5
p.m. sometimes,” Jones said. “It just

depends on how much work needs to be
done that day.”
With a staff working diligently to put the
show together by organizing art pieces to
display a timeline through the ages of art
history and creating mural and set design
for the show, it all came together by the
start of the show Dec. 3.
During the reception Thursday night,
awards were presented to the student artists
in categories such as best 2D and 3D art
works, best painting, best portfolio and
best sculpture.
In total, there were over 20 categories of
awards given.

close matches by decision
to finish up the sweep with
a 48-21 final score.
Dawson County then
traveled to Union County
for a series of matches
against two teams from the
north Georgia region and
two teams from North
Carolina.
Starting the day against
the Chattooga Indians out
of Summerville, the Tigers
started the match with an
early lead as the Indians
forfeited four weight class
es on the day. Dawson
County built on that lead
with four pins and two
wins by decision and
brought their winning
streak to three matches
with a final score of 51-21.
Having traveled form
Andrews High School in
Andrews, N.C., the
Wildcats gave up a quick
30 points to the Tigers
as they did not field wres
tlers in five of the 14
weight categories.
Dawson County made
short work of the wrestlers
that did take the floor as
the Tigers won all but one
match by pin and over
whelmingly defeated the
Wildcats 78-3.
The Dawson County win
streak stopped at four as
the Tigers faced off against
the Banks County
Leopards in their third
match of the evening.
Despite forfeiting four
matches overall, the
Leopards fought their way
to a narrow 42-38 victory
pinning the Tigers six
times along the way and
fighting one match to a
draw.
In the final contest of the
day the Tigers looked to
bounce back against anoth
er team from North
Carolina, the Swain
County Maroon Devils,
and started the match on
even terms as both teams
forfeited one weight class.
Not a single fight ended in
the first round and as the
teams traded pins and deci
sions the Tigers found
themselves entering the
final bout of the day
needing a pin to win
the contest.
Wyatt Smith entered the
circle against J. Sauza of
the Maroon Devils and
they fought deep into the
third round as Smith man
aged to gain the lead in
points, but the pin eluded
him until the last 9 seconds
when he finally managed
to hold Sauza down long
enough to get the call and
secure the victory for him
self and the Dawson
County Tigers by a final
score of 42-31.
“Yes, the team win did
hinge on the final match,
but we felt pretty good
going into that match as
Smith is one of my top
wrestlers,” said Head
Coach Arron Haynes. “The
two that came up huge
were sophomore Logan
Buytendorp and senior
Kevin Arias, both getting
much needed pins to set up
the final showdown for
Wyatt Smith to bring it
home.”
The Tigers were in
action once again on Dec.
12 as they hosted teams
from Jefferson County and
Tucker. Results were
unavailable as of press
time.
