Lumpkin Campground Road, county
comprehensive plan on board agenda
By Allie Dean
adean@dawsonnews.com
The Dawson County
Board of Commissioners on
Thursday will be discussing
the partnership with the
Georgia Department of
Transportation to address
the traffic issues at the inter-
section of Lumpkin
Campground Road and
Hwy. 53.
Work started a few weeks
ago, and the project will
install turn lanes on
Lumpkin Campground for
drivers turning east onto
Hwy. 53 and west onto Hwy.
53.
The county will be in
charge of demolition and
asphalt work and will con
tract out the concrete work,
and will re-stripe the road
once the work is completed.
GDOT will pay for the
asphalt, provide traffic flag
gers and retime the traffic
lights.
On Dec. 13 Dawson
County Public Works
Director David McKee will
be presenting a request to
award a contract for curb
and gutter replacement to a
contract company upon
receipt and review of bid
documents, which will not
be received until after the
work session.
According to the agenda,
staff has met with several
contractors to receive quotes
on the curb and gutter
replacement and bids will be
received prior to the Dec. 20
voting session.
McKee is asking for a
budget of $100,000 to come
out of SPLOST VI, the gen
eral fund or impact fee col
lections.
McKee will also be bring
ing before the board a deci
sion on a grant that was
awarded to the county in
2014 for beautification of
the Ga. 400 corridor.
The grant, called a
GATEway grant, would fund
a portion of landscaping on
GDOT right of way along
Ga. 400. The grant for
$46,690 was awarded to the
county but staff held off on
the project until developers
completed improvements in
the area.
According to the agenda,
in September of this year the
project was bid out and
Dawson County will need to
decide whether to move for
ward with the project.
The board will also be
hearing a presentation from
Planning and Development
Director Jameson Kinley of
the comprehensive plan,
which has been approved by
the Department of
Community Affairs and is
ready for the board to adopt.
The plan must be updated
every five years in order for
the county to maintain its
Certified Local Government
Status, which makes the
county eligible for state
grants and programs.
The plan is a road map for
elected officials to use when
planning for the future, and
the county began the update
process early this year with
surveys and public meetings
soliciting citizen input on
the way they want future
growth and development to
be handled.
The meeting will begin at
4 p.m. Dec. 13 in the second
floor assembly room at the
Dawson County
Government Center.
The board unanimously
approved appointing
Emergency Services
Director Danny Thompson
the county’s emergency
management agency director
and appointed Gary Coates
to the Development
Authority of Dawson
County during the Dec. 6
voting session.
They also unanimously
approved the other items on
the agenda.
