District 3 Commissioner
Jimmy Hamby was recognized at
last week’s work session for his
eight years served on the board
of commissioners.
His last meeting will be Dec.
20.
Hamby announced he would
not be running for re-election in
January, stating he was imposing
a two-term limit on himself.
Hamby first took office in
January 2011 and was elected to
a second term in 2014. He suc
ceeded Commissioner Mike
Connor, who chose not to seek
re-election.
Taking his seat on the commis
sion in January will be Tim
Satterfield, who ran unopposed
in this year’s election.
Hamby is a lifelong Dawson
County resident. He is married to
Shirley and the two have a son,
Chess, who is a teacher and
coach at Dawson County High
School.
“I’ve enjoyed it, I really have,”
Hamby said Dec. 13. “Ups and
downs but for the most part it’s
been good. Just continue doing
what we’ve been doing. I’m going
to turn it over to Tim and I’m
going to hold him accountable
too. I appreciate the support.”
Board members and county
staff took a few moments at the
end of the meeting to thank
Hamby for his work and his ser
vice.
“Even though I have only been
serving with him for two years, I
have known him my entire life
and I appreciate his service and
commitment to Dawson County,”
Commission Chairman Billy
Thurmond said. “If you never sit
up here you don’t really under
stand what the commitment is. I
appreciate somebody that is will
ing to step up and do that and
work diligently to make the
county move forward. Jimmy has
done that the past eight years.”
District 4 Commissioner Julie
Hughes Nix said she has enjoyed
working with Hamby, and that
while he may be off the board she
will still look to him for advice.
“I’m still going to lean on him
and get information from him
and talk with him,” she said.
District 2 Commissioner Chris
Gaines has served on the board
with Hamby for only the past
two years, and said it has been a
pleasure getting to know him as a
fellow commissioner as well as a
friend.
District 1 Commissioner
Sharon Fausett had nothing but
kind words to say as well.
“I have really enjoyed working
with Jimmy and he is a standup
guy, an honorable man, has so
much common sense and he has
his excellent decision making
skills and I’m going to miss him
here but he’s not getting rid of
me,” she said.
Senior Services Director Dawn
Pruett also addressed Hamby’s
tenure on the board.
“I could always look at Jimmy
and if there was something I
knew he wanted to question he
could question it, but if not I
always felt like he had so much
faith in me in doing the job at the
senior center,” she said. “I’m
going to miss his face and his
every other weekly hug. Thank
you for your hard work that
you’ve done for us.”
Facilities Director James
Tolbert had the last word.
“After knowing you for 30
years I never thought I would see
you up there in that position but I
think you’ve done a wonderful
job and I appreciate your contri
butions,” he said. “It took you a
little while to get in there but
after you got the hang of it you
done a good job.”
“That makes two of us,”
Hamby replied.
