Looking at a crowd full of
children already enjoying Parks
and Recreation programs,
District 1 Commissioner Sharon
Fausett beamed with joy on
Nov. 17 as she discussed
Dawson County’s closing on
120 acres of donated land for a
future park.
This land, which has been
donated by longtime resident
Anne Styles and her family, is
located off of Ga. 183 and
Elliott Family Parkway in the
central part of Dawson County.
“How appropriate that all
these children are here, and we
closed on this today,” Fausett
said during the Board of
Commissioners’ Nov. 17 meet
ing.
During the meeting, Parks and
Rec Director Matt Payne also
recognized children from Parks
and Rec’s elementary girls’ flag
football, second grade football
and cheer teams for their Super
Bowl wins this past season.
“She’ll leave such a legacy for
all of these kids ... I’m so thank
ful and we want you [all] to
enjoy it,” Fausett said to the
crowd.
The BOC previously
approved the acceptance of the
land donation during their Aug.
4 voting session and undertook
a three-month due diligence
period.

The Rotary Club of Dawson County
distributed over 600 meals to mem
bers of the Dawson County communi
ty during its annual free community
Thanksgiving event.
The event took place on Monday
Nov. 21 at the senior center at
Veterans Memorial Park starting at 5
p.m. It operated as a “drive thru din
ner”, and according to Rotary Club
President Nicole Stewart community
members began lining up in their cars
up to an hour before it began.
“We got there around 3:30 and
asked all of our volunteers to get there
by 4 or 4:15 to get ready, and we
already had people lining up at 4,”
Stewart said. “We started making our
meals a little before 5, and by a little
after 5 we had already given out most
of our meals.”
During the event, large speakers
outside the senior center played cheer
ful Christmas music and Rotarians
greeted cars with smiles, waves, color
ful signs and exclamations of “Happy
Thanksgiving!”
“We were dancing and having fun
and singing to people; we really had a
good time,” Stewart said. “It’s my
favorite event that we do; we really
have a good time.”
The club had planned to give away
600 meals and ended up problem solv
ing near the end of the event to replen
ish the food and exceed that number.
According to Stewart, Ingles was able
to sell the club more sides from their
cafe in their store, and people in line
were all patient and understanding
during the short delay.
“Every single one of them was so
nice about it; they were awesome,”
Stewart said. “No one was ugly about
it or anything; they were all very
nice.”
One thing that members of the club
love, Stewart said, is getting to see

Residential
moratorium
extended again
By Julia Hansen

Dawson County’s moratorium on resi
dential rezoning applications was extended
for another three months following a unan
imous 4-0 vote by the Board of
Commissioners on Nov. 17.
The moratorium bars the acceptance of
residential town, RS-2, RS-3, RPC,
C-PCD, RMF, residential manufactured
home park and mixed-use village applica
tions until Feb. 17, 2023.
As with before, District 3 Commissioner
Tim Satterfield asked if individual manu
factured home applications would still be
impacted by the moratorium.
BOC Chairman Billy Thurmond con
firmed that individuals would be eligible to
request rezones, explaining that the manu
factured classification is intended for a
park and not a single home.
At the board’s Nov. 3 voting session,
multiple board members said they’d
received calls from single-residence appli
cants whose rezoning requests had gotten
caught up in the moratorium.
“I don’t think that was the intention of
the board when we did this. Those are not
