Ex-DCHS football star transfers to Ga. Southern

Former Dawson County foot
ball player Bryson Broadway is
taking his talents to Statesboro,
confirming his transfer to the
Georgia Southern program from
Georgia State in a Twitter post on
Monday, Dec. 12.
Broadway, an offensive line
man who helped protect Zach
Holtzclaw in his first season as
Tigers quarterback, began his col
legiate career at FCS (Division
1-AA) Eastern Illinois for two
seasons before making the leap to
the FBS (Division 1-A) at
Georgia State.
Staying in the Sun Belt
Conference, Broadway will join a
Golden Eagles squad that is com
ing off a regular season that
included an upset victory over
Nebraska and an overtime win
against rival Appalachian State.
They will also soon play in
their fifth bowl game in just nine
seasons in the FBS.
Broadway was impressed with
the coaching staff at Georgia
Southern both for how they coach
and who they are.
“Coach Helton and his staff
were and are very welcoming
people. They’re more than coach
es, they’re a family,” Broadway
said. “In I believe 538 snaps they
only allowed seven sacks this
whole 2022 season, which is to
me very impressive and speaks
volumes to the players’ invest
ments and the coaches’ eagerness
to coach them to greatness every
week and every Saturday.”
Broadway believes his talents
will complement a team coached
by the aforementioned Todd
Helton — who was a longtime
head coach at Southern
California before taking over in
Statesboro at the start of the 2022
season.
Already having a full season of
Sun Belt experience, Broadway
will be tasked with protecting a
new starting quarterback next
season.
He believes he can bring plenty
of contributions to the Golden
Eagles with his attributes and
experience as a starter.

player — physicality and effort

High-powered offense and the return

Contributions beyond the arc proved
to be most impactful for the boys team,
who won all three games — securing

After an undefeated regular season, the
Dawson County Middle School wrestling
team placed fourth at the Mountain League
Dual Championship hosted by Pickens
High School Friday, Dec. 9.
Three members of the team would go on
to win individual championships in their
respective weight classes the next day dur
ing the traditional competition.
Javen Jett, Cody McBrayer and Ronan
O’Keeffe all won individual titles during
Saturday morning’s tournament. Those
three wrestlers had also won their matches
Friday night.
During Friday’s team event, the two-time
defending champion Tigers had a tough
time against a talented Lumpkin team to
start the night.
Jett was the first Tiger sent to the mat
and was successful early, using his agility
and quick thinking to best his opponent.
After Jett’s early win, the Tigers fell
short in several matches, many of which
were close and lasted several minutes.
O’Keeffe would help bring the Tigers
back on the board with his own win, show
ing good sportsmanship after his hard-
earned victory.
Soon after that, McBrayer had one of the
team’s strongest performances of the night,
