Growing up in the 70s,
“tech” was not a word
around much. Microwaves
were turning stay-at-home
moms on their heads with
amazement. Atari was THE
game to have. Tech today is
all places - even carried in
back pockets and cross
bodies - therefore, access is
24/7.
But looking at kids today
complaining of head and

makes me wonder if we need
to reach back into the past a
bit and limit the time that
adults and young people

are using their devices.
Someone asked me,
“How do I limit the time
tweens and younger are on
their phones and com

First, I think we need to
understand that school as
signments and related issues
are not in play here. But at
home, in the car, and at res
taurants, screens can be put
away and families can com
municate and live without
them. This can and will be
difficult - but it’s doable.
Also - using phones as
“alarms” to wake up for
school/work/etc. is not a
great idea. The device is way
too accessible; but if that
phone is charging outside
the room, there is no chance
that shows, emails, or social
media are inhabiting your
kids’ brain long after they
should be sleeping.
Plus - knowing how to
read non-digital clocks is
something that we all need!
Kind of like driving a man
ual car or writing cursive!
So, parents, step up and
converse with your kids -
while you’re driving or cook
ing or even watching tv.
Let’s talk more and look less.
So, an oldie but goodie
dessert is no-bake cookies. I
used to go to sleepovers, and
we’d make a big pot of these
and just eat until we were
stuffed. It’s just healthy pea
nut butter, right? Quick and
easy and fast to disappear!
When the family is around, I
double this recipe.
NO BAKE COOKIES
3 tbsp (heaping) cocoa
2 cups white sugar
V2 cup milk
1 stick (8 tablespoons) un
salted butter
V2 cup creamy peanut butter
3 cups oatmeal (quick or
regular - regular oats will be
a little chewier)
1 tsp vanilla
1/8 tsp salt
Wednesday, July 5,2023
Mix cocoa, sugar, milk,
and butter into a large
saucepan and bring to a boil
over medium heat. Stir con
stantly! When at a nice rol
ling boil, turn off heat, add
the peanut butter, and stir
until it’s all melted and in
corporated. Add oats, va
nilla, and salt. Stir well.
Quickly (this will get stiff)
drop large spoonfuls onto
wax paper and let cool.

CITY OF PEACHTREE CITY

A detailed copy of the proposed budget is available for

enough food to feed family
members unless they decide
not to pay other bills, such as
healthcare, housing, or util
ities.
Nearly half of all people
getting food stamps (SNAP)
are kids. Still, one out of every
eight Georgia children face
hunger.
Along these lines, I re
cently met Diana Galloway,
director of the new non-profit
food bank in Fayetteville
(Compassion Ministries Food
Pantry) which is dedicated to
feeding less fortunate Fayette
County residents. Galloway's
experiences and commit
ment to supporting those in
need make her an asset in ad
dressing food insecurity
within our community.
When the grocery store
shelves became empty due to
the impact of the pandemic,
Diana took it upon herself to
share food with those in
need, freely offering support
during a time of scarcity. Her
food initiative during a time
of crisis marked the begin
ning of her involvement in
addressing food insecurity on
a larger scale.
Fayetteville’s food bank,
located at 193 Johnson Ave
nue in Fayetteville, is a place
where individuals and fam
ilies experiencing food inse
curity can access vital food
resources. The establishment
of the pantry, achieved with
support and guidance from
Dierdra Raine, who runs the
food pantry at Andrew
Chapel Church in Jonesboro,
is an extension of Diana's life
long dedication to volunteer-
ism.
But Galloway's dedication
to serving the community is
not a solitary effort. The food
pantry is only made possible
by the support and hard work
of her team of dedicated and
selflessness volunteers, in
cluding Pastor Wanda
Hawkins. Their collective ef
forts contribute to the
smooth functioning of the
pantry and enable it to ex
pand its reach. Together, they
form a core group that assists
in making the process of ad
dressing food insecurity more
manageable.
Through their combined
efforts, Galloway, Raine,
Hawkins, and other ded
icated individuals in the com
munity are working towards
a common goal of ensuring
that everyone has access to
nutritious food. The pantry
provides hope for a brighter
future where no one in Fay
etteville goes hungry.
As the pantry continues
to grow, passionate individ
uals who are willing to con
tribute their time are needed
to join their team. Further,
the need for donations is on
going. To continue providing
vital food assistance to those
in need, the pantry relies on
the support of individuals,
businesses, and organiza
tions in the community.
Every donation, whether big
or small, can make a differ
ence in the lives of individ
uals and families facing food
insecurity.
Currently, Compassion
Ministries Food Pantry is
open every Tuesday and
every other Saturday. As do
nations increase, so will the
hours of operation. To donate
or inquire about how you can
help, reach out to Diana Gal
loway at 678-357-7025. Your
generosity and willingness to
contribute will be deeply ap
preciated and will go a long
way in making a positive im
pact on the lives of others.
The need to address food
insecurity is a major national
and state problem. But it di
rectly affects our friends and
neighbors.
It is very easy for us to
close our eyes to the food
needs of our fellow Fayette
County residents. It is easy,
but not morally correct.
Through our collective ef
forts, we can make a differ
ence in the fight against food
insecurity, providing hope
and sustenance to those who
need it most.
