Introducing the 2023 All-County Boys’ Athletes of the Year
Special to FCN
Before we turn the page
to a new year of school
sports, there is another big
honor to bestow. The All-
County Boys’ Athletes of
the Year represent the fi
nest all-around talents
from each county high
school.
Boys’ Athlete of the
Year - Kaleb Cost,
Sandy Creek High
Kaleb Cost started the
year off strong as a key cog
on the state champion
football team. As a re
ceiver, he caught 43 passes
for 740 yards and 10
touchdowns. On defense,
he compiled 38 tackles and
two interceptions, with
another touchdown. On
special teams, he added
699 yards on kickoff and
punt returns, along with
handling kickoff duties.
In the spring, he made
himself at home on the
base paths for the Patriot
baseball team. He hit .545
with four homeruns and
20 RBIs. He also racked up
a state single-season
record 84 stolen bases. His
two-way talent put the
country on notice. Cost
picked the University of
North Carolina where he
will suit up for both the
Tarheel football and base
ball teams.
Fayette County High -
RJ Kennedy
RJ Kennedy gets
buckets. Kennedy, a senior
star for the Fayette County
High basketball program,
averaged 24 points, four
rebounds, and four assists
per game. He keyed the
Tigers to a state runner-up
finish. His excellence
earned him a host of
county, region, and state
accolades.
McIntosh High -
Tate Morris
Tate Morris made his
mark at McIntosh. In the
fall, he was the engine of a
high-scoring offense for
the football team. A senior
quarterback, he ranked
among the most prolific
players in both the state
and the countiy, throwing
for 3,014 yards and 23
touchdowns and running
for 1,040 yards and three
touchdowns.
In the spring, he was a
senior utility player and
pitcher, hitting .347 with
23 RBIs and posting a 3.70
ERA and 21 strikeouts over
22 innings. He was a key
piece of the first McIntosh
baseball team to ever reach
the state championship
series.
Starr’s Mill High -
Tito Alofe
Tito Alofe is the epi
tome of a student-athlete.
Alofe put on a performance
for the ages at the state
track meet this spring. He
won the high jump and the
triple jump and finished
second in the long jump.
Alofe was the high point
total champion for all 4A
boys’ competitors, helping
lead the Panthers to a state
runner-up finish.
As impressive as he was
on the track, he was even
better in the classroom.
Alofe was Starr’s Mill’s
valedictorian and won
Georgia STAR Student, the
first win for a county stu
dent in the award’s 60-plus
years. Alofe will attend
Harvard University and
major in neuroscience or
biomedical engineering.
Whitewater High -
Gabriel Best
Gabriel Best is always
on the move. A dominant
distance runner, Best often
bested the competition. In
the fall, he placed fifth
overall at the state cross
country meet, the best in
dividual finish in the
county. In the spring, he
placed third in both the
1,600-meter and 3,200-
meter run at the state track
and field meet. Best will
run collegiately at Augusta
State University.

After three successful
years at Whitewater
Creek Country Club in
Fayetteville, 2023 marks
the first year that the
American Junior Golf As
sociation will host its an
nual Atlanta Classic
tournament, set Aug. 18-
21, at the new Planterra
Club in Peachtree City.
The AJGA Atlanta
Classic, presented by
UHY CPA, was first
played in 2009 at The
Country Club of the South
in Johns Creek. Since
then, it has become one of
the top open events on
the AJGA tournament
schedule.
Last year’s event had a
field size of 78 golfers in
stroke play competition
over 54 holes. The cham
pion of last year’s tourna
ment was Jon Ed Steed
from Enterprise, Ala.
The event raises
money for local charities
and pairs teams of three
amateurs with some of
the game’s future stars for
an unforgettable round of
golf in a fun “shamble”
format. Since its found
ing, the AJGA Atlanta
Classic has raised more
than $600,000 to benefit
charities.
Proceeds from the
2023 tournament will
support AJGA’s Achiev
ing Competitive Excel
lence (ACE) grant and the
Fayette Fire Foundation.
Additionally, since
2020, the tournament has
brought an estimated
$542,346 in positive,
local economic impact to
the Fayette County com
munity.
The 54-hole, World
Amateur Golf ranked jun
ior tournament is pre
ceded by the Chick-fil-A
Junior-Am Fundraising
Tournament on Thurs
day, Aug. 17.
In this year’s tourna
ment, players will be re
quired to participate in
one of the two Junior-Am
fundraising events. The
morning fundraising
tournament will begin
with an 8:30 a.m. shot
gun start and the after
noon will be a 1:30 p.m.
shotgun start on Thurs
day, Aug. 17 at Planterra
Club. Once both Junior-
Ams are filled, there will
not be any other practice
round spots granted.
