Understanding the 1 in 26:
November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month

November is recog
nized as National Epilepsy
Awareness Month to not
only educate, but also to
advocate for the acknowl
edgment of the severity of
the disorder and increased
understanding of how to
help those who may be
diagnosed with epilepsy.
From media represen
tations in horror films like
The Exorcist to frightening
portrayals in medical dra
mas like Grey’s Anatomy,
seizure disorders and epi
lepsy have long been dis
played as episodes that
bring fright without any
true understanding.
According to the Epi
lepsy Foundation, this
year’s campaign for the
month, “Change Our Epi
lepsy Story,” focuses on
encouraging people with
epilepsy and their care
givers to share their jour
ney with epilepsy,
including struggles living
with this condition and
challenges they’ve over
come.
“National Epilepsy
Awareness Month is at the
perfect time for our com
munity to share our ex
periences with seizures
and change our epilepsy
story,” representatives
from the Epilepsy Founda
tion said.
According to the foun
dation, one in to people
will have a seizure, and
one in 26 people will de
velop epilepsy during their
lifetime. This indicates
that there are about 3.4
million people living with
epilepsy in the United
States, with 470,000 of
them being children.
“Epilepsy is a neurolog
ical disorder that can affect
any one of us, regardless of
race, age, or gender,” rep
resentatives said. “Sei
zures are a symptom of
epilepsy. Not all seizures
are the same and many
people with epilepsy have
more than one type of sei
zure.”
Given common misun
derstandings and misin
formation spread about
seizure disorders and epi
lepsy, many people who
may struggle with this dia
gnosis may be in search of
a positive outlet, without
fear.
“Misunderstanding
and misinformation about
seizures contribute to con-
Project Love Provides Holiday Meals to Homebound Seniors
Fayette Senior Services
(FSS) announces the start
of the annual Meals on
Wheels (MOW) Project
Love campaign and organ
izers are challenging cit
izens and businesses of the
community to make a dif
ference this holiday season
by donating to the cause.
Each year, FSS, a
501(c)(3) non-profit organ
ization, takes the initiative
to raise awareness and
funds to help combat
hunger and isolation for
seniors in need. Project
Love seeks to enhance and
expand the connections of
seniors to the community
by providing a daily meal
delivery and check-in visit
while continuing those con
nections through holiday
and weekend meals.
This fundraiser is criti
cal in providing holiday and
weekend meals throughout
the year to homebound
seniors in the community
that are not covered by the
general funding FSS re
ceives annually for the
MOW program, according
to officials.
One meal can be pro
vided to feed a senior with a
donation as small as $5.
There is no limit to the
number of meals that can
be purchased, and general
donations are welcomed.
“For every five dollars
we all fall short of our goal
of $40,000 (8,000 meals),
one less holiday meal will
be delivered to a senior in
need,” commented organiz
ers.
M&R Print kickstarted
the campaign with a dona
tion toward the 2023 Proj
ect Love initiative.
Donation forms and ad
ditional information can be
found at www.fayss.org and

tosh Trail in Peachtree City.

tinued feelings of stigma
tization and negative out
comes for people with
epilepsy,” representatives
added. “People with epi
lepsy may experience ‘felt’
stigma, which leads to
shame about their con
dition and fear of discrim
ination if they talk about
it.”
These stigmas are often
linked to higher seizure
frequency, younger age at
epilepsy onset, or longer
duration, lack of knowl
edge about epilepsy, and
young age. That stigma
can also reduce the quality
of life for those who live
with epilepsy, even when
the seizures are well con
trolled.
For the Epilepsy Foun
dation, there is strength in
knowledge, understand
ing, and advocacy through
hosting education pro
grams like secure first aid,
raising awareness and
funds through Walk to
END EPILEPSY events,
advocating for training
and policers to support
students in seizure-safe
schools, and investing in
research and innovation.
