Cardinal Stritch said he was “surprised and amazed” by his appointment “to such an import ant office in the Roman Curia,” and that in going to Rome he will try to prove himself worthy of the Pope’s confidence “and of the great Catholic body of whom I shall be a symbol.” The text of Cardinal Stritch’s statement fellows: “When this news came to me, I was surprised and amazed. It never entered my mind that the Holy Father would think of me for such an important office in the Roman Curia, which assists His Holiness in the government of the Universal Church. “It is clear that His Holiness, in honoring me, principally had in mind honoring the Church in the United States. Never before in history has an American pre late been called to such an im portant office. The Sacred Con gregation of the Propagation of the Faith, under the immediate authority of the Holy Father, is entrusted with the care of the foreign missions of the Church. The Catholics of the United States have shown a growing interest in these missions. Quite evidently, the Holy Father, in calling me to this office, wished to give another expression of His Fatherly appreciation for this interest. At the call of His Holiness, I shall go to Rome and, with God’s help, try to prove myself worthy of his confidence and of the great Catholic body of whom I shall be a symbol. “To my clergy and people of this occasion I express my deep affection. They, have been my support and edification through these 18 years. I know that I shall have their prayers in the discharge of the heavy responsi bilities of the office to which I am called. I may say to them that I have not received the of ficial document calling me to this important office. When I receive it, I shall inform them in detail on what is involved in this call of the Holy Father. “For the present all that I know is that the Holy Father has called me to be the Pro- Prefect, of the Sacred Congrega tion of the Propagation of the Faith. The Prefect is the esteem ed Cardinal Fumasoni-Biondi, whom we remember as being Apostolic Delegate in the United States. It will be a great com fort to me to have at my side this great Cardinal, who, with the exception of his years as Apostolic Delegate in the United States, has been an outstanding official from Minor to Prefect of the Sacred Congregation of the Propagation of the Faith. His knowledge of the foreign mis sions, his great ability and his understanding, promise me some usefulness in helping the Holy Father in his great apostolate for the missions of Holy Church in these difficult times. “May I add that after eighteen years here in Chicago, despite my being from other parts, I am a Chicagoan and I love Chicago, its people and its warmth. It is my prayer that through the years which God will give me I shall be able to contribute my little part in making Chicago the world’s greatest city, in which spiritual values will take precedence over mere material and humanistic considerations,” RAY GOOLSBY BARBER SHOP Opposite Georgia Power Building 53-A Fairlie, N. Here the real sin is due to the malice of the one “scandalized,” rather than to the action of the other person. A puritanical per son might be “pharisaically scandalized,” for example, by seeing another take a drink or play an innocent game of cards. This kind of scandal derives its name from the fact that the Pharisees seized upon the very words of Chirst as an occasion to commit sin. Q. Didn't our Lord predict that He would spend three days and three nights in the tomb? ("For even as Jonas was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." St. Matthew XII: 38), How is it then that Christ rose from the dead on Easter Sunday morning, just about 40 hours after His burial on Good Friday? A. In Rabbinic usage, the ex pression “day and night” was a compound term designating ei ther a full cycle of 24 hours, or an incomplete cycle of 24 hours. Thus, for example, Father Ric- ciotti, in his “The Life of Christ,” quotes a first century rabbi: “One night and one day make one ‘Onah (a period of twenty- four hours), and a part of one ‘Onah counts for a whole ‘Onah.” By using the term, then, Our Divine Lord was saying in effect that He would be in the grave either three complete days or for three partial days. From sub sequent history we know that He was referring to the iatter. THE DINETTE GOOD FOOD Across From St. Joseph's Infirmary JA. 3-9207 248 IVY ST., N. E. ATLANTA, GA.
