4:00 P. M.
His Excellency, Bishop Mc

SAVANNAH—Pontifical Low
Mass, celebrated by His Excel
lency, Bishop Thomas J. Mc
Donough, marked the beginning
of the Carmelite Foundation in
Savannah. The Mass was cele
brated on June 6th and was the
first offered in the new Chapel
at the Carmelite Convent.
Attending were the six Dis-
calced Carmelite Sisters of the
new foundation and a few in
vited guests. The Mass was fol
lowed by Benediction of the
Most Blessed Sacrament and a
short talk by Bishop McDon
ough.
The Bishop expressed his hap
piness at being “privileged to be
an instrument in bringing these
wonderful Sisters to the Dio
cese of Savannah.” His Excel
lency pointed out that the bulk
of the Catholic population in the
Diocese is located in Savannah
and that the remainder is scat
tered over 87 counties. He point
ed out the absolute necessity of
prayer if the Missionary efforts
of the Diocese are to be fruit
ful.
“Many people wonder why
women will leave the world to
devote themselves to a life of
prayer,” said the Bishop. “The
answer, of course, is that they
are following the example of
Christ, who withdrew Himself
from the world that he might
perfectly fulfill the Will of His
Heavenly Father.”
He concluded his remarks
with thanks not only to the
Carmelite Sisters, but also to
those “devoted laymen and lay-
women of the Diocese who have
worked and sacrificed to make
this foundation possible.”
The new Foundation will be
known by the name of “Our
Lady of Confidence.” The choice
of the name is a tribute to the
Most Reverend Archbishop
Gerald P. O’Hara, who studied
