At one time, lines of people six and eight abreast extended for some 20 city blocks, waited to enter the cathedral to pay their last respects to the Card inal. Preceding this, the body of the beloved Cardinal had ar rived here by plane from Rome, and it is estimated that well over a quarter of a million peo ple lined the route .as the cort ege escorting the body made its way from O’Hara airport to downtown Chicago. All Chicago was plunged into mourning. The Cathedral and all other Catholic churches had their entrances draped in purple and black crepe. Flags on mu nicipal buildings flew at half- staff. His Excellency Archbishop Amleto Giovanni Cicognani, Apostolic Delegate to the United States, was celebrant of the fu neral Mass. “We lay at his feet our tribute of reverence and affection, Bish op William E. Cousins of Peo ria, 111., said in his sermon at the Mass. He predicted that “generations yet unborn will revere and exalt the name” of the Cardinal, “a man they never knew.” “Permit me to speak, not of a public figure, but of a kindly, gracious man of God who walk ed our earth all too briefly, and left all of us a little better for having known him,” Bishop Cousins said. The Bishop, who had been a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago before his elevation to the episcopate, spoke of the late Cardinal as “an upcomprising American,” as the second oldest member of the American Hier archy in years of consecration, as a prelate who had served the National Catholic Welfare Con ference long and well, as “a priest of the people, loving them with a deep Christ-like love,” as one who held an exalted of fice but “managed with inherent simplicity and humility to let the man shine through.” Bishop Cousins said that, “from the early days of his priesthood,” Cardinal Stritch was “destined to be a leader, and he discharged the duties of each new.assignment with cha racteristic apostolic zeal.” “His love for the country of his birth was an intense, whole- souled sentiment that could nev er be challenged,” the Bishop added. He asserted that Cardi nal Stritch “was a firm believer in our country’s essential great ness, and he preached consist ently the responsibility of loyal American Catholics to keep it so.” The Bishop said that “vol umes can and will be written” of the Cardinal’s “prestige as one of the outstanding church men of recent generations,” and that “a litany of his achieve ments could be recited.” “To an already inspiring life,” Bishop Cousins continued, Card inal Stritch “added inspiration when he was named by our Holy Father, Pope Pius XII, as Pro-Prefect of the Sacred Con gregation for the Propagation of Current’ Dividend 4% Per Annum Savings Received by the 10th Earn Dividends for That Month TRI-CITY FEDERAL Savings & Loan Association PO. 7-9774 606 South Central Ave. Hapeville YOUR . tig mifpendent Insurant! While the body was there, it was blessed by Auxiliary Bishop John J. Broadman of Brooklyn who lead the delegation of priests and laymen that met the plane. Several thousand men, wo men and children were at the O’Hara airport here when the Cardinal’s body arrived in this city. Hundreds of priests and numerous representatives of lo cal governments were among those in attendance. It was recalled here that when Cardinal Stritch left Chicago a little over a month ago to take up the duties of Pro-Prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith in Rome, he told a throng at the railroad station that he would return to Chicago some day, and expressed hope that they would come down to the station to welcome him. His unselfish accept ance of duty’s call will endure in the memories of well dispos ed men for unnumbered years. His appointment to the Roman Curia was so unprecedented that it became a subject of conversa tion and speculation for people throughout the world. Millions recognizing the sacrifices in volved were deeply edified by his resignation to God’s will, as expressed by the Holy See.” The Cardinal’s last hours, Bishop Cousins said, “were wor thy of his unfailing priestliness. Day after day for almost half a century he communed with the infinite Son of God in his mourning Mass. He calmly and patiently awaited the end of a full life in the same Divine Company, united himself with the suffering Christ, never al lowing the crucifix to leave his hands. He followed where God beckoned. He went to the Eter- hal City to keep his rendezvous with death.” The five absolutions after the Mass were bestowed by Cardi nal Mooney, Archbishop Cicog- nani, Bishop William A. O’Con nor of Springfield-in-Illinois, Bishop Martin D. McNamara of Joliet, 111., and Bishop Albert R. Zuroweste of Belleville, 111. Before the Mass at which the papal delegate officiated, three other Requiem Masses were of fered. On Saturday, May 31, Auxili ary Archbishop William D. O’ Brien of Chicago, president of the Catholic Church Extension Society and a close friend of the late Cardinal, offered a Re quiem Mass attended by mem bers of religious orders from within the archdiocese. On Monday, June 2, the sec ond Requiem Mass was offered in the Cathedral by Auxiliary Bishop Bernard J. Sheil of Chi-, cago. It was attended by the school children of the archdio cese.
