Mr. Peltz is peeved Theology for The Layman (Continued on Page 4) r Whatever is in the Father must be in His Idea of Himself, and must be exactly the same as it is in Himself. Otherwise God would have an inadequate Idea of Himself, which woud be non sense. Thus because God is in finite, eternal, all-powerful, His Idea of Himself is infinite, eter nal, all-powerful. Because God is God, His Idea is God. “In the beginning was the word, and the Word was with God. And the Word was God.” So far, the reader may feel that all this is still rather re mote — lull of significance, no doubt, to theologians but not saying much to the rest of us. With the next step we take, that feeling must vanish. The Father knows and loves; so His Idea knows and loves. In other words the Idea is a person. Men have ideas, and any given idea is something: God’s Idea of Him self is not something only, it is Someone: for it can know and love. The Thinker and the Idea are distinct, the one is not the other, Father and Son are two persons. But they are not separate. An idea can only exist in the mind of the thinker; it cannot, as it were, go off and set up in busi ness on its own. The Idea is in the same identical nature; we could equally well say that the nature is in the Idea, for there is nothing that the Father has which His Word, His Son, has not. “Whatsoever the Father has, FIGURE 8 Monday—Closed 1:00 p. m.-3:30 p. m. 4:30 p. m.-7:00 p. m. — Sunday — 8:15 p. m.-10:45 p. m. MU. 8-1154 — Atlanta, Ga. RELIEVE SWITCHBOARD OVERLOAD... Mr. P. is in the chart selling business. He has a nice new chart on the cost of living. It shows the cost of practically everything curving upward. But one price refuses to follow this constant uptrend. It’s the price of electricity. The average family we serve is getting more than 2% times as much electricity for each dollar as it received 25 years ago. Factors like this upset the neat cost-of-living curves. They upset P. P. Peltz. He’s peeved. We’re sorry to offend Mr. Peltz, but £lad that we’ve been able to keep electricity plentiful and cheap. That’s why electricity’s one of the biggest bargains in your family budget. Appearing on the Saturday television show “Muscihiere” (the Music Maker), Mr. Como was given an enthusiastic wel come by the studio audience. He stepped into the show’s reg ular guest spot in which a ce lebrity contestant gives his win nings to charity. Answering questions on song titles and singers, he won $1,000. He matched it with another $1,000 from his own pocket and asked that the total amount be given to the Boys’ Republic at Civitavecchia, Italy. He delight ed the audience during the pro gram by speaking the Italian Abruzzese dialect of his parents. The popular American singer and his wife and three children are vacationing in Italy. He is visiting the Abruzzi region, from which his parents came, and the Piedmont area from which his wife’s family stems. During their sojourn here they were received in private audience by His Holi ness Pope Pius XII. that the Son has in like manner” (John xvi.15). Each possesses the divine nature, but each is wholly Himself, conscious of Himself as Himself, of the Other as Other. One immediate difficulty pre sents itself. We can hardly help thinking of sons as younger than 1 their fathers. Is the Second Person younger than the First? If not, how can He be His Son? But this is another of those points where we must not argue from the image to the original. Among men, fathers are always older than sons, simply be cause a human being cannot start generating the moment he exists; he must wait till he de velops to the point where he can generate. But God has not to wait for a certain amount of eternity 'to roll by before He is sufficiently developed! Eternity does not roll by, it is an abiding Now; and God is infinite in all perfections, not needing to de velop. Merely by being God, He knows Himself with infinite knowing power, and utters His infinite self-knowledge in the totally adequate Idea of Him self which is His co-etcrnal Son.
