This follows from the doc trine, as St. Paul explicitly teaches, that each one of us without exception has been pre destined for sanctity: “He singled us out in Him be fore the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before Him in love.” (Ephesians: I: 4). THAT SOME CONTEMPLA TION can be practiced even by those called to the active life is evident from a study of the lives of the saints. AMONG THE LAITY (i.e„ those who never entered relig ious life as such), for example, St. Zita maintained a contem plative life while performing her duties as a servant. St. Ger ald of Aurillac did not neglect contemplation while living in the midst of the world. King St. Louis of France practiced con templation while surrounded by the glitter of the royal court and the endless temporal affairs of state. And even among those saints who did enter the relig ious life or the priesthood, com paratively few retired to a clois ter, yet all were nonetheless contemplative, as the degree of their holiness attests. Q: With reference to ihe First Saturday devotions: according io Our Lady's promise, one must receive Commun ion on the First Satur day of five consecutive months, "say five decades of the beads," and pray "for fifteen minutes while meditating on the fifteen mysteries of the rosary." Does this actually mean that one must meditate on all ihe mysteries of the rosary? A: In order to fulfill the req uisites of the First Saturday Fatima Devotion, it is apparent ly sufficient to meditate upon a single mystery of the rosary, or on several mysteries, or even on all taken together. This seems to be the authentic in terpretation issued with the im primatur of the bishop of Leiria (in whose territory Fatima is located) on September 21, 1939. It is most important to re member in this matter that the recitation of the rosary and a quarter hour’s meditation are in tegral parts of the First Satur day Devotion as based on our Lady’s promise to Sister Lucia. Q: What is a concordance of the Bible? A: A Biblical concordance is an index to the Bible, arranged systematically, so that a specific reference can be easily found. Food for thought is the only kind that hasn’t been affected by the high cost of living. LEGION OF MERIT FOR CHAPLAIN WASHINGTON, (NC) — The Legion of Merit was presented here to a 38-year-old Navy chaplain for “exceptional meri torious conduct” in connection with the Navy’s moral, leader ship program. The presentation was made to Father (Lt.) John J. O’Connor of the Navy chaplain corps. FORMER MOSCOW PRIEST NAMED TO COLLEGE STAFF WORCESTER, Mass., (NO— Father Georges L. Bissonnette, A. A., former chaplain to Ameri can Catholics in Moscow, has been assigned to Assumption College here. He will act as chairman of the political, economic and social studies division and will supervise the college’s recently instituted for eign affairs program. Father Bissonnette was in Moscow, under the terms of the 1933 Roosevelt-Litvinov agree ment, when he was expelled by the Soviets in March 1955. The Soviets at the time offered no explanation for his ouster, but it was later determined that the action was taken because of the United States’ refusal to extend the visa of Archbishop Boris of the Russian Orthodox Church, who was then visiting in this country. The U. S. State Department held that the cases were dissimilar. Since his return the Assump- tionist priest has been writing and studying. He is presently a candidate for a doctorate in public law at Columbia Univer sity. 1915 ROSWELL RD. PHONE 7-4211 MARIETTA, GA.
