For H. C. Smith
ATLANTA — Requiem Mass
for Howard C. Smith was offer
ed August 5th at the Cathedral
of Christ the King. The Rev.
John Stapleton offered the
Mass.
A native of Augusta, Mr.
Smith was assistant vice presi
dent in charge of the research
department of Retail Credit Co.
He was the son of Howard
Claud Smith Sr., and Mrs. Mary
Lou Hansberger Smith.
He was a member of the Ca
thedral parish. Mr. Smith was
also a member of the Atlanta
Art Assn, and the Atlanta Sym
phony Guild. He belonged to the
Piedmont Driving Club and the
Nine O’Clocks and was a past
international president of the
Gyro Club.
Surviving are his wife, the
former Helen Riley; Sons, Ens.

Contributions Of Women To Growth
Of Church, Notion To Be Discussed
At NCCW Convention In St. Louis

WASHINGTON — The con
tributions of women volunteers
to the growth of the Church and
improvement of communities in
the United States will be re
viewed at the 29th national con
vention of the National Council
of Catholic Women.
The sessions will be held from
September 20 to 24 in St. Louis
at the Kiel Auditorium. Some
10,000 delegates are expected to
attend the five-day meeting
held at the invitation of Arch
bishop Joseph E. Ritter of St.
Louis and the St. Louis Arch
diocesan Council of Catholic
Women.
Margaret Mealey, NCCW ex
ecutive secretary, has announc
ed that Msgr. Paul F. Tanner,
general secretary of the Nation
al Catholic Welfare Conference,
parent body of NCCW, has been
invited to discuss “Woman’s
Service to the Church.”
He will be joined by four wo
men noted for their personal
careers of service: Jane Hoey,
New York and Washington. D.
C., Director of the Kerby Foun
dation and former director of
the bureau of public assistance
of the U. S. Department of
Health, Education and Welfare;
Mrs. Floyd W. Lee, San Mateo,
N. M., U. S. delegate to the In
ter-American Commission of
Women; Sister Maria del Rey,
public relations director for
Maryknoll Sisters, and Rep.
Leonor K. Sullivan, of Missouri.
Miss Hoey’s topic will be wo
man’s service to the local com
munity; Mrs. Lee’s, the world
community; Sister Maria del
Rey, the missions, and Mrs. Sul
livan, government.
Miss Hoey has worked
through the Kerby Foundation
to encourage understanding and
acceptance by Catholic laymen
and women of their role in the
civic life of democratic society.
She was awarded the Sienna
Medal by Theta Phi Alpha, na
tional Catholic social sorority
and NCCW affiliate, for her
achievements.
Mrs. Lee was appointed to
the Inter-American Commis
sion, a specialized agency of the
Organization of American States
by President Eisenhower in
1952. She was elected vice chair
man of the commission at its
12th Assembly at the Pan
American Union in Washington
in 1957.
Sister Maria del Ray joined
the Maryknoll nuns in 1933.
Among books she has written
are “Her Name is Mercy,” “In
and Out the Andes,” “Nun in
Red China,” and “Bernie Be
comes a Nun.”
Mrs. Sullivan, the first woman
member of Congress from Mis
souri, was elected to her first
term in 1952, as a candidate for
the seat occupied by her late
husband from 1940 to 1951. She
was named one of 10 women of
achievement in St. Louis in 1957.
Mrs. Albert E. Spillman,
Hempstead, L. I., N. Y., vice
president of the World Union of
Catholic Women’s Organiza
tions, will serve as chairman of
the panel. Mrs. Spillman’s vol
unteer contributions include
service as a member of the ex
ecutive committee of USO and
its member agency, National
Catholic Community Service
and as vice president of the
National Social Welfare Assem
bly.
