Question
Box
(Continued from Page Four)
fastened in front by a series of
small round buttons, usually
covered with cloth. The collar
has a small opening so that the
white linen Roman collar may
show through. (As made in opr
country, the Roman cassock is
frequently fitted with several
back folds, patterned in varying
degrees after one style of cas
sock used in France.)
THE OTHER form of cassock
worn here is the so-called Jesuit
cassock, which is fastened by a
sash instead of buttons. It is
cut very fully, somewhat like a
double-breasted coat.
Although the ordinary cassock
worn by priests is plain black
(save in certain tropical climates
where white is permitted), the
cassock worn by bishops and
prelates varies in its overall col
or, or the color of its trimmings,
according to hierarchal and pre-
latial rank.
THUS, THE ORDINARY cas
sock worn by the pope is entire
ly white; that of cardinals, black
with scarlet red silken trim
mings and lining. Bishops and
monsignors who are domestic
prelates wear black, trimmed
and lined with amaranth red
silk. Monsignors who are papal
chamberlains wear black, trim
med with purple. The style worn
by the pope, bishops and pre
lates is basically Reman, though
a sash is also worn. In general
the pope wears a sash of white
watered silk with gold fringes;
cardinals, of red watered silk;
archbishops and bishops, of
plain purple silk; domestic pre
lates and papal chamberlains,
the same as that of bishops.
(Other colors are used for
times of mourning or penance.)
BESIDES THE ORDINARY
cassocks just described, the
pope, cardinals, bishops and
monsignors have a different cas
sock called the “choir cassock,”
used for public ceremonies. The
pope’s again, is all white. Cardi
nals ordinarily wear scarlet red;
archbishops and bishops, purple
trimmed with crimson red silk;
domestic prelates, a shade simi
lar to a bishop’s; and Monsig
nori di Mantellone (papal cham
berlains), purple trimmed with a
lighter purple than the cassock
itself. These are but general ref
erences, for special colors are
called for particularly during
penitential seasons 5nd periods
of mourning. As used by various
ranks, cassocks also differ in
specifics. The sash worn with
the choir cassock generally fol
lows the color of the cassock
itself.
