Published By The Catholic Laymen's Ass'n Of Georgia Vol. 39, No. 8 DIOCESE OF SAVANNAH EDITION OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF THE DIOCESE OF SAVANNAH MONROE, GEORGIA, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1958 Youth Workshops Planned For Sept. DEDICATION OF GROTTO SCHEDULED SEPT. 28TH Meetings Set For Albany, Savannah SAVANNAH — Delegates from all parishes in the Savan nah and Augusta Deaneries and their adult advisors will con- verage on Savannah on Satur day, September, 20th for a day of Youth Workshops. The next day, Sunday, September 21st, Albany will play host to the youth of that Deanery and their advisors for similar workshops. The Savannah workshops will be held at the Cathedral Day School, while Saint Teresa’s School auditorium will be the scene of the meetings in Al bany. The workshops, directed by the Reverend Herbert J. Well- meier, Diocesan Director of Youth under the Patronage of His Excellency, Bishop Thomas J. McDonough, will feature workshops on “The Parish Youth Council” and “Catholic Youth Week,” conducted by the Reverend .Monsignor Joseph E. Scheider, Ph.D., National Youth Director. Delegates and advisors will be welcomed by Bishop Mc Donough, who will also address the groups at luncheon and at the closing Plenary Session. Church, sponsored youth ac tivities are nothing new in the Diocese of Savannah, but these workshops mark the first dean ery-wide activities under the Parish Catholic Youth Council form of organization. Under this form of Youth Activities, com paratively new in the Diocese of Savannah, activities are formu lated on the Parish level instead of on an area-wide level. Each Parish has its own Catholic Youth Council which chooses its own activities, under the guid ance of competent adult advis ors. These activities are also im plemented by the young people of a given Parish. The four-fold programming feature, embrac ing religious, physical, cultural and social activities, represents a radical departure from past programming which has often limited itself to only one or the other type of these activi ties. Although affiliated with the Diocesan Council of Catho- lice Youth and the National Catholic Youth Office, each Parish Council is independent, directed entirely by its own of ficers under the guidance of the parish priest and adult ad visors. PORT WENTWORTH — An outdoor grotto erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of the Blessed Vir gin at Lourdes will be dedicated by His Excellency Bishop Tho mas J. McDonough on Sunday afternoon, September 28th. at 4:00 p. m. The grotto, a replica of the grotto at Lourdes, was built entirely by volunteer labor of men of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, with donated materials and funds. The pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes, Father Francis Dono hue praised the zeal and hard work of members of Our Lady of Lourdes Men’s Association who built the impressive shrine. “A faithful band has worked untiringly and with truly holy determination to build a shrine worthy of the Mother of God. They began in mid-April and worked every day, except Sun days and rainy days into Sep tember. Even on the hottest days of the summer they came out after work and labored on this grotto until dark. They are still work- SCHOOLS LAYMEN'S CONVENTION OCT. 25th-26fh Atlanta will be host to the 41st annual convention of the Catholic Laymen's Associa tion of Georgia October 25th and 26th.
