margo made these declarations
in the course of an official visit
to the presidential palace by
His Eminence Crisanto Cardi
nal Luque. He also paid tribute
to unifying strength of Catholi
cism, asserting that “all other
forces have been dividing and
weakening the nation except its
religious faith.”
In the course of the visit, for
which the Cardinal and his par
ty were accorded full honors,
Cardinal Luque told the Presi
dent that his call was not sim
ply one of protocol. Referring
to the election of Mr. Lleras
Camargo by a coalition of the
nation’s two major parties in an
effort to put an end to Colom
bia’s long period of dictatorship
and disunity, the head of the
Colombian Hierarchy said:
“It is in your intelligence, sin
cerity and firmness of purpose,
with God’s help, that we have
placed the hope of proper arid
effective remedies for so many
and such serious evils.’ ’
The Cardinal said that he
wanted to “express in a cordial
and sincere manner the senti
ments of profound satisfaction
with which we welcomed your
explicit statements concerning
the new manner in which —
with firm and decisive will —
you aim to carry out in govern
ing the nation, today so deeply
troubled because of the general
letting down of Christian and
democratic virtues; because of
the stubborn persistence of hat
reds, personal resentments and
political rancors; because of the
horribly excessive violence of
offenders who have been gener
ally sheltered by impunity; be
cause of the grave difficulties
that have placed the national
economy at th,e brink of ruin
and have sown the seeds of
terrifying social problems.
Cardinal Luque told Presi
dent Lleras Camargo that the
Church will do all that it can to
aid in the task of national res
toration.
In his reply, the President
said:
“The cooperation you have of
fered me is valuable, indispens
able and most urgent to the
government. If only we can be
good Christians in this difficult
period, giving of ourselves all of
our resources of understanding
and charity in our approach to
those who suffer and are in
need, we can overcome this seri
ous crisis which cannot be solv-
