LETTERS
RECEIVED
THE EDITOR,
THE BULLETIN:
Through the kindness of a
confrere, I had the pleasure of
reading the article on the “His
tory of the Franciscans in Geor
gia,” in the August 23 issue of
THE BULLETIN.
In addition to providing the
reader with a fine summary of
a very inspiring mission history,
listing a number of important
“Franciscan Firsts,” this fine
front-page story brought to
mind a couple of additional it
ems which may also be of inter
est. Perhaps the following may
not be as well known.
1) When, at the close of the
Revolutionary War, our Mer
chant Marine expanded so rapr
idly that it became necessary to
have a naval force for its pro
tection, plans were laid for the
construction of the USS Con
stitution. “Old Ironsides” as she
was called, was built in Boston,
launched in 1797. But it is not
generally known that live oak
from St. Simon’s Island, Geor
gia, supplied the keel or staunch
foundation of the most treasur
ed relic of Revolutionary days.
This, according to records in
U. S. Navy Library in Washing
ton. This live oak was planted
by the Spanish Franciscan mis
sionaries whom you so deserv
edly lauded in your article.
2) When The Brooklyn Bridge
celebrated its “Diamond Jubi
lee” On May 24 of this year,
much was written and said
about the men who made it pos
sible. One fact was by-passed in
the glowing account of fact, sto
ry and legend about this re
markable engineering feat: The
fact that the giant span is held
up by wood. When quicksand
prevented other methods of pro
viding a foundation, live oak
piles from St. Simon’s Island
again came to the rescue. So the
famous Brooklyn Bridge rests
on live oak foundations provid
ed by the Spanish Franciscans
who planted the seedlings on
Georgia’s famous islands.
Perhaps these two items may
prove of interest. In any case, I
do wish to thank you for giving
such fine space and prominence
to “those who have gone before”
and whose “works follow after
them.”
With best wishes and appreci
ation, I am
Sincerely
FR. IRENAEUS
