COLLEGE OF CARDINALS—The Consistory of January, 1953 will
go down in history as the.Pope’s effort to bring its membership up to
the full strength of 70. Although a solemn occasion, the imposition
of the red biretta, in this case, upon the head of James Francis
Cardinal McIntyre, Archbishop of Los Angeles, brought a smile to
His Holiness when the photographer begged for “one more shot please
because his first flash-bulb failed. (NCWC)
PIUS XII AND YOUTH—“May your hearts be spared the horrors of
war,” Pope Pius XII is saying to these two American children re
ceived in audience at the Vatican. His Holiness delighted in ieceiving
and talking to the many youth who visit-“ Rome. (NCWC)
POPE OF PEACE—When elected Pope on March 2, 1939, Pius XII
took as his coat of arms a dove bearing an olive branch—the symbol
of peace. In this, one of his most recent photos, he is shown with a
gift of two small doves, perched unafraid on his hands, from fellow
members of the Third Order of St. Francis. His Holiness has been
a tertiary for 50 years. (NCWC)
In October, 1936, Eugenio Cardinal Pacelli, Papal Secretary of State, who later became Pope
Pius XII, toured the United States by plane after his arrival in New York. In the above photos
he is shown on his one day visit to Washington, October 22. Upper left photo: He is greeted on
