November is observed as the “Month of the Holy Souls” by
Catholics throughout the World. On November 3, the Feast of
All Souls will be commemorated. Introduced by St. Odilo in the
11th century, it will be a day of special prayer for the dead. The
picture is of a stained glass window in San Jose church, Caracas,
which is a reproduction of the famed painting, “Purgatory” by
Cristobal Rojas, Venezuelan painter of the last century. Painted
on commission of the Venezuelan Government, the original is in
the La Pastora church in Caracas. (NC Photos)

CHRISTIAN THOUGHT AND
ACTION: The Role of Catholic
ism in Our Time, by Dom Aelred
Graham (Harcourt Brace, $5.00).
(Reviewed by Cecilia L. Hines)
If you do not want to “stretch
your mind” you will not get a
great deal out of Dom Aelred
Graham’s latest book. The
learned Benedictine educator,
head of Portsmouth Priory, who
writes with such devastating
honesty and intelligence com
bined with great versitility of
style, does not present a blue
print for guidance but leaves
the reader to make use of his
own thinking power.. This is a
practice which is more con
ductive to develop connections
that will remain longer and are
more securely grasped than
when the facts are presented
simply and apt to be passed
over in a superficial manner.
The first part of Christian
Thought and Action deals with
the basic relations between love
and action. Love is the dominant
force in the Christian scheme
but love, whether it be of God.
of neighbor or of self, can be
aimless or even destructive un
less based on understanding. It
is here that the title seems to be
a little too broad, even a bit
misleading. So many very fine
Catholic writers try to express
so much coverage on the title
page that it confuses even the
most serious reader.
The second part of the book,
entitled “The Life of the Indi
vidual,” develops the importance
of true Christian understanding.
Error can so easily parade as
virtue on one side, as broadness
of mind on the other. If con
sideration of the subject is
raised from the moral to the
ontological plane much of this
misunderstanding can be
avoided.
The third section discusses
the “Life of Society” and gives
the reasons why Catholics get
involved in the confusion arising
from allegiance to Catholicism
and other causes which are not
even grounded in Catholicism.
It is a very valuable contribu
tion to Catholic thought occu
pied, as it is, with avoiding
these confusions- with their ac
companying inner tensions. Dom
Aelred outlines two ways to
avoid them — the understand
ing of Christian truth as a basis
for love in action and a know
ledge of as well as a respect for,
facts.
Dom Aelred has given his
readers real food for thought.
His profound love and know
ledge of Christian values aided
by a healthy respect for con
structive criticism is his means
of giving to the world what he
AMERICAN CLASSICS RE
CONSIDERED, by H. C. Gardi
ner, S.J., (Scribners, $4.95).
(Reviewed by Flannery
O’Connor)
In this collection of essays by
competent Catholic literary
scholars the aim, loosely, has
been to reconsider 19th cen
tury American writers in the
light of Catholic theology and to
discover the influence of this
theology on their writing. With
the exception of Poe, the writ
ers considered — Emerson.
Cooper, Brownson, Hawthorne,
Longfellow, Poe, Thoreau, Mel
ville, Whitman, and the literary
historians — were largely in re
action from the rapidly decaying
Calvinism. They swung widely
away from this to Transcen
dentalism, and in this process of
going from one extreme to an
other, they touched upon or
veered toward a great many
pre-Relormation attitudes, res
idual pieties that had their
roots in something deeper than
Puritanism. This is not to say,
as Father Gardiner, the editor,
points out, that any of the writ
ers under consideration were
conscious of deeper roots or
“would not have repudiated any
such cultural affinity if it had
been pointed out to them; it is
to suggest, however, that their
work can be adequately appre
ciated only if it is considered
against an older theological and
philosophical background.”
Of late there has been a cer
tain amount of renewed atten
tion given to Christian theology
and its influence on literature,
and this book is a notable con
tribution to reestablishing a
long neglected point-of-view.
