Pays Tribute To
Cardinal Mooney
CLEVELAND, (NC) — Arch
bishop Edward F. Hoban, Bish
op of Cleveland, said the late
Cardinal Edward Mooney had
“a long career of service to his
Church and to his country.”
The Archbishop of Detroit,
who died (October 25) in Rome
of a heart attack, was ordained
as a priest of the Cleveland
diocese in 1909. He served in the
diocese for 14 years after his or
dination before beginning his
career as Church diplomat and
administrator.
His family moved to Youngs
town, Ohio, then part of the
Cleveland diocese in 1387, when
he was five years old, and he
grew up there. From 1909 the
future Cardinal was professor of
domgatic theology at Cleve
land’s St. Mary’s Seminary.
From 1916 to 1922 he was head
master of Cathedral Latin
School here. And from 1922 to
1923 he was pastor of St. Pat
rick’s church in Youngstown.
Archbishop Hoban declared
that the death of Cardinal Moon
ey “came as a shock to his many
friends among the clergy and
laity” of the Cleveland diocese.
Among personal friends of the
Cardinal who expressed grief at
the news of his death were Fa
ther John M. Powers, pastor of
St. Ann church here; Msgr. Ed
ward S. Hannon, pastor of the
Church of the Blessed Sacra
ment; Msgr. Nicholas F. Monag
han, pastor of St. Charles
church; Msgr. Paul Ferreri,
pastor of St. Gregory church,
and Michael F. Kearns, a retired
official of the Cleveland Trust.
A niece, Mrs. Loretta Mehler
of Youngstown, said she receiv
ed a letter from the Cathdral on
October 24, mailed from Gibral
tar. She said Cardinal Mooney
reported that his voyage on the
way to Rome had been pleasant
and that he was feeling well.
ITALIAN T.V.
COVERS ELECTION
ROME, (NC) — Italy’s single
television channel unceremoni
ously interrupted its evening
programs each time the ballots
were burned in the Sistine
Chapel, and switched its cam
eras to the Vatican so its view
ers could determine for them
selves whether the smoke was
black or white.
It was announced that the
channel, which is normally sil
ent in the mornings, would im
mediately begin morning trans
mission whenever white smoke
appeared.

Pope Pius XII Was Gentle
Man Dedicated to Peace
By Jack Williams, Jr., Editor,
The Waycross Journal-Herald
Pagellia means “peacg” and
certainly no one worked harder
for it than Pope Pius XII who is
being laid to rest at St. Peter’s
in Rome. The audience I had
with him will always be remem
bered.
Undersecretary of State Dean
Rusk had made arrangements
and I left my hotel by taxi in
the early morning so that the
proper arrangements could be
made.
Princes of the church were
going in and out of the audience
chambers, cardinals in their red
robes of the church.
Finally, a frail little man who
withall gave evidience of de
termination came forward as la-

The fountains seemed to play
a merry tune as we left the Vat

Instead of taxying back to the

meditate too on the experience
with the great man we had just
met.
He is buried today. A great
spirit rests in final peace.
