REV. PHILIP HASSON, S.M.
ill 1 PHILADELPHIA
MARIETTA — The Reverend
Father Phillip Aloysius Hasson,
S.M., former Assistant Pastor of
Saint Joseph’s Church, in Mari
etta, passed on to his eternal re
ward Tuesday night, October 14,
in Philadelphia. He had served
at Marietta from August 1953
until May of this year, when a
severe and acute throat ailment
forced him to seek treatment
elsewhere. He was admitted to
the American Oncological Hos
pital in Philadelphia, which was
his home city. His condition was
acute and when it was discover
ed that it would be some time
before he could take up his du
ties again in the event of a cure,
he was replaced by another at
the Church which he had served
so faithfully and well. His death
is a keen loss for the members of
his family surviving him, and to
his brethren in the Society of
Mary as well as to the parish
ioners of St., Joseph’s and his
many friends who loved and re
garded him with deep and true
affection.
Father Hasson was sixty years
of age at the time of his death.
He was born and reared in Phil
adelphia. As a child he attended
St. Francis de Sales Parochial
School. When he had completed
his grammar school course at
St. Francis de Sales, he knew
and answered the Call of God
to the priesthood. In September
1908, he was admitted to the
Marist Seminary, a preparatory
school for the education and
training of boys ’ for the holy
priesthood in the Society. He
then completed this preparatory
training in five years and in
1913, entered the Marist Col
lege, a Major Seminary and af
ter two years there completed
the required courses of Thomis-
tic Philosophy. Both Marist
Seminary and Marist College
are in Washington, D. C. Both
are facilities connected with the
Catholic University of America.
In September of 1914 he en
tered St. Mary’s Manor, just
opened in Langhorne, Pa., (now
Penndel) for his Canonical No
vitiate, a prerequisite for en
trance into the Society of Mary,
After.the completion of the year
of Novitiate, in September, 1915,
he returned to Marist College in
order to pursue Theological Stu
dies -and to prepare more fully
for the duties of the life of the
Priesthood. On November 25,
, 1917, he dedicated himself en
tirely to the life long service to
God under the Rule and in ac
cord with the Spiritual Model
of Our Blessed Mother by mak
ing the three perpetual vows of
Poverty, Chastity and Obedi
ence, the three great Evangeli
cal Counsels, as a member of
the Society of Mary.
The long awaited day so ardu
ously sought, and , prayerfully

FATHER HASSON
contemplated, came on the 19th
day of June, 1919, when the ven
erable Rector of the Catholic
University Bishop Thomas J.
Shahan, made him a Priest of
God forever in Caldwell Hall
Chapel at the Catholic Universi
ty. He was the first of many pu
pils of St. Francis de Sales Pa
rochial School to be ordained a
priest. 17,73 was a thing of much
joy to his devoted and saintly
Pastor, the late beloved Bishop
Michael J. Crane as well as to
his beloved parents and sisters.
Father Hasson lived the life of
a priest for forty years. The
years, have been as fruitful in
virtue as they have been varied.
As a religious priest, he sub
jected himself to the orders of
his superiors in the Society of
Mary. For the first five years of
his priestly life he was assigned
rochial School to be ordained a
duties chiefly in the field of the
education of young men and
boys. The first year, 1919-1920,
he was a professor at Jefferson
College, in Convent, La., since
closed. His next assignment was
as a teacher in the Marist College
in Atlanta. Since he showed a
predilection for preaching and
parochial work, he was appoint
ed Assistant Pastor of Sacred
Heart Church in Atlanta and
served in that capacity from
1924 until 1927. In that latter
year, more and more demands
were made on the Society of
Mary for the preaching of Par
ish Missions -and Retreats both
for laymen and religious, so Fa
ther Hasson who had previously
taken special courses of training
for this specific type of work,
was appointed tod serve as a
member of the Marist Mission
Band, with headquarters in
Washington, D. C.
For fifteen years, 1927 until
1941, Father Hasson preached
Missions, Retreats, conducted
Triduums, preached at Forty
Hour Devotions, throughout the
United States. He endeared him
self to all, priests and laity as
well. In 1941, he was relieved of
ah assignment which entailed
travel from one place to anoth
er, and given a new and steady
responsibility. He was appointed
to Pastor of St. Francis Xavier
Church, and the Missions of
Southeast Georgia, a parish of
about 8,000 miles in area and
with about 800 souls. He was
superior of the Marist Fathers
who served with and' under his
direction. He left his mark in the
growth and development Which
is still seen and felt. Since 1947
Father Hasson has served in
many places as Assistant Pastor,
namely, Holy Name of Mary
Church, Algiers, New Orleans,
La., Notre Dame des Victoires
San Francisco, Cal., St. Mich
ael’s Church, Wheeling, W. Va.,
St. Vincent De Paul’s Church,
Elm Grove, W. Va.
His remains were interred in
the Cemetery Plot of the Mary
Fathers, located on the grounds
of St. Mary’s Manor, Penndel
Pa., where he made his Noviti
ate for the Society of Mary. Not
too far from the home in which
he was raised as a child. Not far,
too, from the remains of his be
loved father and mother, but in
the very midst of those of his
brethren of the Society of Mary,
with whom he linked himself by
his Sacred Vows of Religion in
the Society of Mary. May God
grant him eternal rest!
Pessimistic people manage to
dodge a lot of good things that
are headed their way.
The man without character
has to depend on reputation to
pull him through life’s battles.
